CANDIDATES MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK 24 HOUR SHIFTS INCLUDING HOLIDAYS; MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR SCHEDULED AND UNSCHEDULED OVERTIME.

Under general direction, performs a variety of duties involved in aircraft rescue, firefighting and other emergency calls.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Reponds to all aircraft emergencies, hazardous material incidences and structural alarms.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls and provides first aid and emergency medical treatment as needed.
  • Performs fire inspections of all buildings on Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) property and safety inspections of aircraft refueling vehicles to determine compliance with RTAA fire prevention rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assists with clearing aircraft from the runway by cleaning fuel spills and disarming military aircraft ejection seats.
  • Maintains departmental records and reports as necessary for compliance with FAA regulations.
  • Participates in continuous training in fire prevention, inspection and suppression through both simulated and on-the-job exercises.
  • Interacts with the traveling public in a professional and respectful manner.
     
This is an FLSA non-exempt position, which means it is eligible for overtime.
 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years full-time Firefighting experience.
  • High School diploma or GED certificate.
  • Emergency Medical Technician certification
  • Hazardous Materials Operations certification
  • Firefighter II Certification

    OR

  • Five years ARFF experience as a National Guard or Reserve member.
All applicants must have a valid driver's license at the time of application (Ability to acquire Nevada state driver's license within 30 days of employment.

In addition, the following certifications are preferred:
  • Fire Inspector I
  • Fire Instructor I
  • Airport Firefighter Certification

All certifications must be current and certified through International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications(ProBoard).
 Selection Procedure:
Review of application: An official Airport Authority employment application must be submitted to RTAA Human Resources.  After submission, an application will be reviewed to determine if it is complete and if minimum qualifications are met. Only qualified applicants will be considered for an interview.

Interview Process: Depending on the size of the applicant pool, every qualified candidate may not be interviewed. The interview process may include subsequent interviews and/or individual assessment exercises.

The RTAA requires each candidate to successfully complete an employment history verification prior to being considered for employment. All employment offers are subject to successful completion of a drug-screening test and a fingerprint criminal history records check. Candidates must be successful in all examination phases to be placed on an eligibility list. When filling vacancies, the Chief of Airport Rescue Firefighters will make a selection from those on the eligibility list. Candidates offered formal employment must also be successful in passing an Airport paid post-offer medical examination.
 Special Requirements:
Must possess the ability to perform all required firefighting duties. On a daily or weekly basis, during routine maintenance duties will require lifting up to 30 pounds. In emergencies, may be moving or lifting passengers or equipment exceeding 100 pounds, with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and must be able to distinguish colors during both day and night. Must be able to work in an environment containing chemicals and hazardous materials. Must be available for shift work, on-call, overtime, and stand-by duties.
