Job Title: Water Reclamation Operator Trainee thru Class I

Performs technical work in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plant equipment. Performs mechanical work in operations and maintenance of plant equipment. Experienced workers initiate their own daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations

 Examples of Duties:
Ensures proper operation and maintenance of plant machinery and equipment used in wastewater treatment. Oils and adjusts machines. Determines if process changes are required and makes adjustments. Calibrates meters in preparation to run tests on various samples. Starts and stops plant machinery and pumps as required. Regulates valves and observes and records plant flows. Operates and maintains incinerator.

Operates equipment such as blowers for air supply to activated sludge, influent and backwash pumps for filtration, chlorinators for disinfecting, centrifuge for dewatering and incinerator for solids and scum disposal.

Maintains logs and records all parameters related to plant operations. Records and manages the consumption of all chemicals used at the plant. Collects composite samples for process control and permit compliance. Performs testing on various samples in order to make lime feed change. Performs chlorine and sulfur dioxide residual tests to determine proper feed rate. Uses computer graphs and trend to recommend necessary plant changes and/or adjustments.

Monitors Solids Handling. Collects samples from holding tanks, gravity thickeners and cake pump. Obtains level readings from holding tanks and gravity thickeners; runs tests on holding tank samples. Checks equipment settings. Opens and closes chain valves on at scheduled times.

Makes a routine check through plants. Records temperature and pressure rates. Exercises and checks position of valves; checks operation of pumps; and hauls sludge.

Monitors system in order to stay within specific guidelines. Records equipment information from equipment. Identifies and corrects problems. Connects and disconnects fuel oil line, water sprayers as required.

Performs preventive maintenance. Steam cleans equipment; checks oil and temperature; cleans filters; cleans hose draft tubes; pumps standing water; and performs other related maintenance duties for unit.

Coordinates the plant's maintenance requirements with superiors. Ensures that the plant is operated efficiently and at minimum reasonable cost. Ensures that all equipment and machinery is kept in good working condition.

Collects and tests samples. Collects data from field testing samples. Performs laboratory tests on a composite and other wastewater samples.

Other Duties
Performs miscellaneous maintenance work. Unloads supplies from trucks. Documents data for State and Federal regulations. Performs preventive maintenance around plant. May provide work direction to others. Performs related work as required.

 Typical Qualifications:
Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Ability to perform mechanical work; pass a color blindness test; exercise excellent judgment; be highly dependable and in good physical condition; receive and carry out verbal and written instructions; maintain records and prepare reports thereon; communicate effectively; work cooperatively with others.

High school diploma or GED.

Must have successfully performed in operator trainee position.

Employees must possess an appropriate Virginia State Class Certification and pass plant specific operations tests within one year of appointment.

 Supplemental Information:
The work requires moderate physical activity, and is performed in field surroundings. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry unaided up to 60 pounds; climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items; and operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.

Employees are subject to callback in emergencies; are exposed to dirt and soil; unpleasant odors; working outside in hot and humid conditions, or in inclement weather; and to hazards in the work.
Employees are subject to weekend and shift work.
