Job Title: Water Reclamation Shift Supervisor

Performs shift supervisory technical work in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plant equipment. Performs mechanical work in operations and maintenance of plant equipment. Workers in this job class supervise operations on a shift. Experienced workers initiate their own daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations

 Examples of Duties:
Supervises shift staff: assigns and reviews work, and takes actions to adjust work, staffing and operations to meet requirements. Recommends selection of new employees, trains and evaluates staff, and takes appropriate actions to improve performance when necessary. Initiates actions regarding hiring, transfer, promotion, payroll, leaves, performance and other personnel actions.

Walks around and checks all areas of plant.

Confers with plant supervisor regarding shift instructions.

Recommends necessary adjustments to plant operations.

Takes samples and runs various tests.

Takes Cl2 and SO2 residual tests and makes necessary adjustment.

Completes shift paperwork.

Backwashes filters as needed.

Monitors plant from computer.

Alternates various equipment around the plant.

Attends meetings as required.

Changes and cleans aeration diffusers.

Performs plant preventative maintenance and operational duties as required.

Puts equipment on and off line.

Loads and unloads Cl2 and SO2 cylinders.

Reviews lab data sheets: makes operational changes, records operational changes in the log book and records chemical deliveries.

Trains employees in the processes and equipment and safety for the related job duties.

Maintains and updates standard operation procedure, safety and MSDS books and policy book.

Evaluates employee progress for rating on assigned areas and updates training sheets.

Orders supplies.

Other Duties
Fills for operators when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

 Typical Qualifications:
Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; of effective techniques of supervision.

Ability to supervise wastewater plant shift operations; to perform mechanical work; pass a color blindness test; assess situations and decide/recommend appropriate courses of action; to train others in the work; to keep records and prepare related reports; to communicate effectively; to work cooperatively with others.

High school diploma or GED.

Seven years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operations that included experience as a lead operator.

Class I Wastewater Certification required.

Must be certified at all stations at Mooney Wastewater Treatment Plant.

 Supplemental Information:
The work requires moderate to heavy physical activity, and is performed in plant surroundings. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 60 pounds; climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items; and operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.

Employees are subject to callback in emergencies; are exposed to dirt and soil; unpleasant odors; working outside in hot and humid conditions, or in inclement weather; and to hazards in the work.
Employees are subject to weekend and shift work.
