This is fire fighting and rescue work, controlling and extinguishing fires using a variety of specialized equipment and techniques, evacuating persons from areas of danger, and performing emergency treatment. Work includes inspecting multi-occupancy and commercial buildings for fire hazards and violations of the Fire Code, and instructing the public on the principles of fire prevention. Work is performed under the general supervision of a fire officer. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with standard departmental practices and general work instructions. Employees work together in fire companies or rescue squads performing general fire fighting and rescue duties in assigned geographic areas of the city. The dangers inherent in the work represent conditions which can be only partially controlled through preventive measures. Work requires moderate physical effort when using hoseline, ladders and tools, and when performing rescues. |

The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applicants must meet requirements by time of appointment to the class of Firefighter. PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS Age - Must have reached eighteenth (18) birthday. Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Firefighter. Possession of State Certification as an emergency medical technician by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania upon completion of training and during tenure of employment as a Firefighter. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT Philadelphia residency is not required at the time of application. Once hired, employees have six (6) months to establish bona fide residence in the City of Philadelphia. |

As a condition of employment with the City, any person offered employment on or after the effective date of this regulation shall be required to certify that such person is fully current on any and all debts, taxes, fees, judgments, claims, and other accounts and obligations due and owing to the City; and shall be required to promise that such person will remain fully current throughout employment with the City. Any person who is or becomes delinquent on such obligations shall be required, as a condition of employment, to enter into a payment agreement. For so long as the person is employed by the City, the amount of the payment as set forth in the payment agreement (not to exceed twenty percent (20%) of the person's gross pay without the person's consent) shall be withheld from each paycheck until all debts, taxes, fees, judgments, and other accounts and obligations due and owing to the City are fully satisfied.
