The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff is currently seeking qualified applicants to be considered for the position of Deputy Sheriff Private, grade W21. The Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women that exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability, integrity and the desire to serve the community.

 Examples of Work:
Incumbents typically perform general law enforcement and investigations; serving civil processes; controlling warrants and summonses; serving summonses/warrants and/or extraditing persons wanted on criminal warrants; executing writs/court orders; transporting prisoners to and from various institutions and courts throughout the State of Maryland and the United States; maintaining security in the courtrooms of the Circuit Courts; monitoring prisoners in holding areas; writing reports; and providing effective and efficient services to the citizens of Prince George’s County. Shift work, which includes weekends and holidays, is required.

 Minimum Qualifications:
•U.S. Citizen
•High School graduate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education (60+college credit hours preferred)
•21 years old at the time of graduation from the Police Academy
•At the time of appointment, possess a valid State of Maryland driver’s license
•Certified by the Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) as a Police Officer

 Additional Information:
BENEFITS:
•Upon appointment, uniform and equipment will be supplied by the Office of the Sheriff. Thereafter $1300 will be provided annually.
•Annual leave: 13 days per year for the first (3) years, 20 days per year after (3) years, 26 days per year after 15 years.
•Sick Leave: 15 days per year.
•Personal Leave: 20 hours per year.
•Discretionary Leave: 1 day per year after 3 years of service, 2 days per year after 5 years of service, 3 days per year after 10 years of service.
•Holidays: 12 - 14 paid holidays are provided for each year.
•Medical Benefits: County pays 75% of cost under POS; 80% of cost under HMO.
•Paid Life Insurance; eligible for additional supplemental life insurance.
•Military leave at 15 days per year to those on active duty with Reserve of National Guard
•Retirement of 60% of annual salary after 20 years of service. Each additional year the pension benefits shall increase by 2.50% up to a maximum of 85% after 30 years of service.
•All Deputy Sheriffs are issued a vehicle under the Personal Car Program, upon completion of their field training period.
•Shift differential pay will be applied at the rate of $2.00 per hour worked on midnight shift and $1.65 per hour worked on the evening shift.
•Tec pay will be applied at the rate of eight hundred dollars ($800.00) per year to Deputy Sheriffs who pass a qualifying language examination in selected languages other than English.
•Tec pay available up to one thousand eight hundred dollars ($1,800.00) per year.

Reasons for disqualification may include (but are not limited to) the following: poor work history; poor driving record; criminal conviction (excluding certain misdemeanors); illegal drug usage, possession, distribution, sale or purchase; falsification of application or other documents; failure to meet physical standards; inability to competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process; and/or any other disqualifying factor as determined by the Office of the Sheriff.

Duration of Eligibility: Eligible applicants will be selected from a continuous register.
