Job Title: Police Officer
Salary: $18.90 Hourly
$1,512.00 Biweekly
Job Type: Non-exempt General Funding
Location: MS - Maintenance and Security, Arizona
 

 
 
This position performs Police Officer duties in controlling and analyzing crime scenes, establishing and maintaining order, identifying and enforcing campus violations, and conducting proactive public relations with students, the public, and employees.

 Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Communicate with students, the general public, and employees while patrolling College properties in an effort to proactively preserve law and order and achieve positive public relations 
  • Respond to public safety emergencies, complaints, concerns or questions
  • Provide public assistance
  • Provide effective customer service
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisors, the College community, and the general public
  • Maintain personal control
  • Interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations
  • Analyze complex and stressful situations
  • Use firearms
  • Use defensive tactics
  • Administer proper procedures to ensure public safety 
  • Inspect and maintain the security of college buildings and facilities 
  • Conduct criminal investigations 
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations
  • Enforce parking regulations
  • Control and direct traffic
  • Respond to, and conduct traffic accident investigations   
  • Operate College motor vehicles
  • Prepare applicable crime and incident reports
  • Use computers and applicable software including databases, word processing, email, and calendaring
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing sufficient to receive and convey instructions to perform the duties of the job
  • Participate in community service activities 
  • Perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department of Public Safety
  • Use safe work practices, to include safe lifting and carrying methods, and the proper use of weapons

 Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma  
  • Valid Arizona Driver License (or ability to obtain Arizona Driver License by date of hire) and demonstration of an acceptable driving record
  • All applicants must meet the minimum requirements as prescribed by Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST). 
  • Attendance at an Arizona Police Academy will be scheduled for successful non-certified candidates.  The academy is physically and mentally challenging. 
  • AZ POST certification and passing the department’s field training officer program are required in order to successfully complete the College’s probationary requirements.
  • Work in a seven-day-a-week operation
  • Some nights, weekends, and holiday work hours will be required

Physical Requirements:

  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see and repetitive motions 
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects 
  • Work around moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

PROCESS:  Applicants who submit a complete application, certifying they meet the minimum qualifications for the Arizona POST, will be evaluated on their possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attributes that have been identified as important to successful performance in the position. Those who are selected will be invited to an agility demonstration and written test.  During the recruitment process they will be subjected to a wants and warrants check, fingerprint check, and driver license check.  

All candidates must successfully meet or complete the following:

  • Agility demonstration
  • International Public Management Association (IPMA) Examination, “D-1 Police Officer Test,” administered by Pima Community College Human Resources
  • Oral Interview, with a board of  Pima Community College personnel
  • Executive Interview, with the Director of Pima Community College Department of Public Safety and the Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration

A candidate who performs successfully under these four elements may be given a conditional job offer. Upon acceptance of the conditional job offer, and before approval by the Pima Community College Board of Governors, the successful candidate will be subjected to a background check pursuant to Arizona POST requirements.

The background check will include:

  • Employment and education history
  • Residence history
  • Police contacts
  • Civil actions
  • Driving history
  • Illegal use of drugs/controlled substances
  • Criminal conduct
  • Prior peace officer employment/certification

Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to provide fingerprints and undergo a psychological evaluation, a polygraph test, and a medical evaluation for fitness for duty.
