Essential Functions:
|
Coordinates and oversees the helicopter maintenance and repair function including disassembling, repairing, replacing and making alterations to helicopters; ensures airworthy condition of helicopters and components including air frames, power plants, main and tail rotor blades, gear cases, clutches, electrical and fuel devices. Schedules aircraft for patrols, training, maintenance and surveillance; assists in developing the sections budget and ensures that expenditures are maintained within budgetary limitations. Sets maintenance standards; supervises, trains, directs and coordinates the work performed by assigned staff; ensures that safety standards are followed and maintained. Maintains logbooks; completes maintenance forms required for FAA certification; maintains a library of materials and information related to helicopter operations and maintenance. Maintains parts stock inventory control; orders, receives and stocks parts; contacts vendors and maintains current listing of specialized vendors; obtains service vendor contracts, monitors work performed and tracks safety record of contractors; maintains currency in the field of helicopter maintenance and repairs. Performs repairs of helicopters including airframe, engine, dynamic components, radio systems, searchlights, FLIR, electrical and fuel systems; performs emergency maintenance or repairs on a call out basis. |

Qualification Guidelines:

Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance would qualify. Example combinations include graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of air frame and power plant experience in aviation and helicopter maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and inspections including two years with fully articulated rotor systems and reciprocating engines. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of engine overhaul and maintenance procedures and standards; methods, techniques, tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of helicopters. Factory school training or an equivalency is preferred from Bell, Enstrom, and MD Helicopters, and Rolls-Royce model C-20 series engines. Military aviation maintenance also preferred. Ability to detect and correct mechanical problems; order and maintain stock of parts and supplies; coordinate maintenance standards with Police personnel assigned to Helicopter Pilot duty; possess the physical strength and agility to lift up to 75 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 75 lbs; establish and maintain cooperative working relations with businesses and City staff; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; keep accurate records. Must have or obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Must have current FAA Inspection Authorization and an Air Frame and Power Plant Mechanic License.
