The Intern/Volunteer Program can provide invaluable experience to individuals interested in a dynamic career in the legal environment. It is an opportunity to experience a practical application of legal principles in such areas as Civil, Small Claims, Traffic, Criminal, Family Law, Probate, Court Administration, Fiscal/Accounting, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Court Technology, Legal Research and Jury Services.

 Example of Duties:
LAW CLERK
Assignment as a law student intern or research attorney volunteer is geared towards highly motivated and self-reliant individuals who prefer the low-profile, behind-the-scenes role of the legal researcher in the adjudicatory process. The assignment is ideal for those who thrive on engaging in analytical reasoning through communication of the written word. Duties may include: drafting objective memorandums on civil and criminal matters; performing legal research on a variety of civil and criminal matters; reviewing and preparing tentative rulings for Law & Motion Calendars and perform other duties as assigned.

ADMINISTRATIVE
Intern/Volunteer positons in Administrative are ideal for individuals who enjoy a fast-paced, customer-service based work environment. Strong verbal and written skills are a must and a background in computer systems is desirable. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of assigned duties in area departments like Human Resources, Court Administration, Fiscal/Accounting, Organizational Development, and Jury Services among others.

OPERATIONS
Operations Interns and Volunteers are typically individuals who are fascinated with the inner-workings and procedural processes of the court. Assignments are limited to Civil, Small Claims, Criminal, Family Law, and Probate. Duties involve working as a liaison with prosecutors, law enforcement, court management and judicial officers. The ideal candidate will possess superb interpersonal, verbal and written skills as well as strong analytical abilities.

SELF-HELP SERVICES CENTER
The Self-Help Services Center provides information, forms, brochures, how-to-packets, and education regarding court procedures and processes that will make it easier for the public to handle court cases and matters seek interns and volunteers. Interns can come from various majors but those in paralegal and law would benefit more. Volunteers do not need prior legal experience and can help, for example, walk the public to courtrooms and with basic paperwork. Computer knowledge is not necessary for volunteers. Self-Help Centers and Court Resources Bureau are currently located at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange and Central Justice Center located in Santa Ana.

 Minimum Qualifications:
Interns are currently enrolled in coursework related to their major, and are looking to assist the court in exchange for work experience related to their field of study and/or school credit towards their degree.

Externs are typically third, second, and some first year law students looking for a judicial clerkship, job-shadowing in the courtroom, or assisting with legal research.

Volunteers are community members or students who do not need school credit.  They are usually more flexible in the areas they can assist.
