OC Public Works provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to provide, operate, and maintain public facilities and regional resources and ensure safe construction and development standards and protection of the environment and improvement of the quality of life for the people of Orange County, in addition to providing land development services for the unincorporated County of Orange.
OC Public Works is a unique County department comprised of five core functions, each of which directly impacts the quality of life for Orange County residents and the private sector. Our core businesses include Administration, OC Facilities, OC Planning, OC Engineering and Planned Communities.
OC FACILITIES | FACILITIES OPERATIONS
OC Facilities is comprised of the following divisions: Real Estate and Asset Management, Architecture and Engineering Project Management, Facilities Operations, Transportation Fleet Management Services and Office of Standards and Compliance.
Facilities Operations provides support services to County Departments/Agencies by operating and maintaining facilities and managing capital projects. Within appropriation limitations, we provide safe and healthful environments for the County's employees and citizen clients.
THE OPPORTUNITY
OC Public Works has an exciting opportunity for a Plant Operating Engineer to work in the Central Utility Facility Department which is responsible for supplying the Civic Center and Jails with Electricity, Chilled Water and Steam which is used for heating, cooling, cooking and domestic hot water.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Unlimited Steam License
- Turbine Endorsement
- Gas Turbines, Gas Compressors and Generators involved in Co-Generation
- EPA 608 Certification
- Computer knowledge in Microsoft Office, MSWord, Excel
- Knowledge with the operations of large equipment such as; Centrifugal Chillers, Boilers, Heat Recovery
- Steam Generators, Steam Turbines and Absorption Chillers
PROVEN EXPERIENCE TO:
- Maintain and operate high-pressure steam generation and central refrigeration equipment
- Inspect heating and refrigeration equipment and take readings on the equipment
- Repair and perform preventative maintenance of boilers, refrigeration equipment and auxiliary machinery
- Perform standard chemical tests of boiler, cooling tower, conditioned and well water
- Test and calibrate mechanical, electrical and pneumatic control instruments
- Make adjustments to chemical treatment equipment or chemical mixtures
- Operate Gas Turbines, Generators and Gas Compressors

Under general supervision, to operate a high pressure steam generation and central refrigeration plant; to inspect, maintain and make mechanical repairs on all types of equipment involved in the production of steam and chilled water; and to do other work as required.
COMPENSATION:
PLANT OPERATING ENGINEER: $33.29/Hourly Flat Rate
| ASSISTANT PLANT OPERATING ENGINEER |  | | |
Under supervision, to assist journey utility plant operators with the operation of a high pressure steam generation and central refrigeration plant; to assist with inspections, maintenance and mechanical repairs; to assume responsibility for operation of the plant during periods when journey operators are not immediately available or for training purposes; and to do other work as required.
COMPENSATION:
ASSISTANT PLANT OPERATING ENGINEER: $28.16/Hourly Flat Rate
