This recruitment is being held to fill current and future vacancies within the Agency until the next recruitment.



Make a positive difference in our community and be a part of a dynamic and innovative team as an Environmental Health Specialist I (EHS I) or Assistant Environmental Health Specialist (AEHS) for the County of Orange, Health Care Agency, Environmental Health Division.



THE POSITION:

Under general supervision to conduct inspections and investigations involving enforcement and interpertations of environmental health laws and regulations; to provide consultation and educational services to various businesses and the general public; and to do other work as required.



SALARY: (Approximate Monthly Rate)

$3,444.13 - $4,373.20 (AEHS) Assistant Environmental Health Specialist
$4,142.67 - $5,581.33 (EHS I) Environmental Health Specialist I

YOU WILL:

Assistant Environmental Health Specialist:

  • Learn to perform inspections and investigations in the enforcement of environmental health laws and regulations. Upon satisfactory performance at this level and receipt of certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, incumbents may be promoted to the class of EHS I.


Environmental Health Specialist I:

  • Perform inspections and investigations in the enforcement of environmental health laws and regulations at food establishments throughout the County.




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Assistant Environmental Health Specialist (AEHS):

  • Possession of a current letter from the State of California Department of Health Services confirming certification as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee under the provisions of Section 106615 (d), California Health and Safety Code.

    Please apply for AEHS to the California Department of Public Health to obtain your State Certification letter before you apply for this recruitment. All applications submitted to Human Resources for AEHS positions will not be processed without the required certification letter.


Environmental Health Specialist I (EHS I):

  • Possession of a valid certificate of registrations as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California. Please include your registration number on your application.


Both Levels Require:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • The ability to work independently with little supervision; interpret data and arrive at sound conclusions based on environmental health principles; use a laptop computer in the field to prepare inspection reports.

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college with a minimum of 30 semester units in basic sciences is required.

Physical Characteristics: Independent body mobility to stand, climb stairs and ladders; traverse on uneven ground or wet slippery floors and at construction sites and large excavated areas; upper body strength to reach and move items from high shelves; ability to speak and hear well enough to converse in person and over the phone; manual dexterity to hand write, use personal tabletop and laptop computers and to drive; vision to read standard text, labels, color change indication test paper, monitoring equipment display screen, computer screen and to drive; strength to lift and carry tools, personal protection and test equipment up to 25 pounds; and be able to wear personal protection equipment including a cartridge respirator (may be required).

Environmental Conditions: Will be required to: work in an office and field environment; work in extreme temperatures both hot (boiler room) and cold (freezer) for short periods and Inclement weather conditions; may come in contact with odors from spoiled foods and fumes from cleaning solvents, chlorine, insecticides and drains around kitchens or hazardous materials including odors and fumes from various industrial processes and chemically contaminated sites such as solvents, gasoline, and chlorinated solvents; enter and perform work in establishments which may have sexually explicit pictures/literature; drive to community sites and to meetings; work some evenings, weekends and holidays.
