This position is open to Certified Police Officers only. All other applicants must apply through the Police Recruit program. Applicants who have not completed a state certified Police Academy similiar to the Norfolk Police academy will not be considered for this position.  Essential Functions:
Enforces state and local laws. Responds to calls for service. Maintains visibility for crime deterrence as well as accessibility. Performs patrol duties and responds to calls for service. Performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, property and the preservation of the constitutional rights of every citizen. Conducts criminal and traffic investigations, conducts field interviews, serves warrants, subpoenas and other court papers, issues summons and makes arrests, watches for criminal, suspicious, or hazardous situations and takes appropriate police action as necessary. Provides assistance and information to the public and assists in the prosecution of offenders. Maintains administrative requirements and provides public information.

 Education/Experience:
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Graduation from a state recognized Police Academy similar to the Norfolk Police Academy. Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments and have a valid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification or attainment no later than 8 weeks after their appointment.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
• EDUCATION – High School Diploma or GED.
• AGE – Be a minimum of 20 years and six months of age when the academy begins.
• CITIZENSHIP – United States citizenship is required.
• MILITARY SERVICE (Applies to Veterans Only) – Military veterans of the Armed Forces must present proof of an Honorable Discharge.
• MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATORS LICENSE – Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and the ability to qualify for a Virginia Division of Motor Vehicle Operators License. The applicant’s right to operate a vehicle cannot be under suspension.

 Additional Requirements:
Please read this section carefully. AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS Any one of these disqualifiers will make you ineligible for employment as a Norfolk Police Officer.

CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS

1. Any felony conviction.
2. Conviction of drunk driving or driving under the influence within the past three (3) years.
3. Conviction of hit and run (If personal injury involved).
4. Conviction of any offense involving moral turpitude, including larceny, concealment, bad checks, embezzlement, and/ or perjury.
5. Any domestic violence convictions.

DRUG USAGE
1. Any use of any opiates (heroin, morphine, methadone, etc.) or any illegal hallucinogen (e.g. LSD, MDZ, etc.)
2. Any substantiated illegal act, including the possession, sale, manufacture or distribution of any narcotic, controlled substance or dangerous drug, as defined by state, or federal law, except the use of marijuana, which is evaluated on the frequency of use.
3. Excessive use of marijuana e.g., more than ten (10) times within one (1) year. 4. Any use of marijuana or hashish or illegal steroids within the six (6) months before submitting an application or any time thereafter.
5. Use of illegal steroids or cocaine will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

DRIVING RECORD
1. Current driver’s license suspension.
2. Driver’s license suspension within the past 12 months because of moving violations.
3. Conviction of drunk driving or driving under the influence within the past three (3) years.
4. Conviction of a misdemeanor hit and run.
5. More than five (5) Division of Motor Vehicle demerit points.

MILITARY
1. Dishonorable discharge from the military.
2. Bad conduct discharge from the military.
