To perform technical work in the field of veterinary medicine and basic health care of animals impounded at the Multnomah County Animal Control Shelter including, but not limited to, inoculations, basic first aid, health checks, cleaning of animals and animal areas, and feeding of animals.

 Examples of Duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following duties and responsibilities, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which are a representative sample of the level of work appropriate to this classification.)

Prepare and administer medications and preventative vaccinations to animals in custody.

Collect specimens and perform other laboratory procedures.

Apply and remove wound and surgical dressings, casts, and splints.

Transport sick or seriously injured animals to the veterinarian.

Maintain accurate records on each patient at the shelter.

Provide information and assist the public and veterinarians.

Maintain inventory of vaccines, drugs, and other veterinary supplies and order supplies as necessary.

Euthanize unclaimed or unwanted animals, as needed.

Conduct daily health checks of animals in custody and for animals to be adopted.

Assist the Animal Care Technicians routine care of animals in custody.

Provide advice in animal care and animal health topics to the organization.

Perform related work as assigned.

 Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receives general supervision from the Animal Care Supervisor or assigned Leadworker.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
Basic animal care, handling and breed identification.

Treatment of common animal diseases.

Basic first aid for injured animals.

Recognize common animal diseases in dogs and cats.

Administer injections to animals in a humane manner.

Record and maintain accurate and concise records.

Perform physical maneuvers in controlling animals and to lift animals and carry at least 60 pounds.

Follow instructions.

Follow technical procedures to perform humane euthanasia of animals by injection method without direct supervision.

 Minimum Qualifications Required for Entry:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of work experience in an animal health-related field, AND

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and two years additional training or course work in the animal health field.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Euthanasia Technician certificate issued by the State of Oregon. Possession of a Certified Veterinary Technician Certificate issued by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Board. (OAR 075-030-0010)
