To perform manual and clerical assisting in Animal Control field activities. Responsibilities include removal of dead animals from public property; impounding stray dogs confined at businesses or homes; transferring injured animals to veterinarians for treatment and performing related clerical work. Employees are required to drive vehicles up to two tons with both manual and automatic shift.

 Examples of Duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following duties and responsibilities, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which are a representative sample of the level of work appropriate to this classification.)

Assist Animal Control Officers in the performance of their duties as assigned by the Animal Control Field Supervisor.

Pick up dead stray animals from public property; impound live stray dogs confined at businesses and homes; provide limited information and answer general questions for the public.

Rescue sick and injured domestic animals and transport them to veterinarians for treatment.; make deliveries of supplies and animals, to and from the animal shelter; deliver animals to veterinarians for spay or neuter services.

Maintain clerical records of animals impounded and work performed while on duty.

Perform related duties as assigned.

 Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receives immediate supervision from assigned management and supervisory staff.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
Basic canine and feline identification and behavior.

Perform physical maneuvers necessary in controlling animals and to lift and carry at least 60 pounds.

Lift and move weights up to 100 pounds.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Maintain accurate written records.

Safely drive Multnomah County Animal Control vehicles; safely and humanely handle domestic animals.

Work out of doors in all weather and work a variety of shifts and hours and be available for on-call duty.

Deal effectively and professionally with the public.

 Minimum Qualifications Required for Entry:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Six (6) months work experience in animal-related work and six (6) months experience in work involving public contact, AND

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by experience working with animals and public contact.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid driver's license.
