This is a journeyman level alarm technician work which requires installation, maintenance and repair on a wide variety of electronic systems including, but not limited to: burglar alarms; fire alarms; access control; evacuation; low voltage controls; and local duress alarms. Alarm Technicians ordinarily receive work assignments on a daily basis and are expected to perform standard tasks independently and often work directly with the customer in identifying electronic problems and working out repair arrangements.

 Examples of Duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following duties and responsibilities, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which are a representative sample of the level of work appropriate to this classification.)

Layout, install, and service fire alarm and evacuation systems and repair equipment to component level; layout and install equipment in accordance with regulations of the NFPA (National Fire Protection Act), and local fire code.

Layout, install, and service burglar alarm systems. Equipment repair to subassembly (remove and replace); layout and install in accordance with the needs of the facility gauged to the security risks and the value of the property to be protected.

Layout, install, and service access control systems; and repair equipment to component level; layout and install equipment in accordance with the needs of the facility.

Design, layout, install, and service local duress system; and repair equipment to component level; layout and install equipment in accordance with the needs of the facility gauged to risks to the personnel from their clients.

Perform maintenance and repair on water flow control circuits and to perform maintenance and repair on non-detention electronic door locks and controls.

Perform maintenance and repair on non-detention and other unique custom built electronic control circuits.

Maintain working relationship with users.

Coordinate and work with personnel from other trades to complete assignments.

Perform related duties as assigned.

 Supervision Received and Exercised:
Performs duties under the direction of a Lead Electrician.

May be assigned to train and coordinate the work of Alarm Technician Assistants.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
Technical and operational capabilities of wireless devices; fire alarm systems, burglar systems; and access control systems including governing regulations.

Technical and operational capabilities of general low-voltage electrical systems.

Digital and analog electronic circuits and general low voltage electrical systems.

Hand and power tools needed in the installation and maintenance of electronic alarm equipment.

Troubleshoot and maintain a variety of alarm-related electronic devices and components that include wireless, fire and burglar systems, and access control systems.

Troubleshoot to the sub-assembly level and/or component level to include the use of appropriate electronic test equipment.

Read and understand schematic diagrams, blueprints and room layouts to determine placement of electronic and electrical equipment.

Climb and work on ladders, scaffolding and lifts to a height of for 45 feet.

Establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and customers.

Use a personal computer.

Work in prison facilities, and in confined and closed areas.

Physical Requirements:

Be able to work in awkward positions and be able to work at heights up to 45 feet.

Have color perception sufficient to recognize color codes on electronic components, wires, and leads.

Have sufficient hearing acuity to recognize difference in sound signals on electronic equipment.

Work in a variety of environmental conditions.

 Minimum Qualifications Required for Entry:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Four year Journeyman's Limited Energy Electrician's License which include three years working with commercial fire alarm and security systems both in installation and maintenance, AND

Training: Additional education in electronic-related course work is desirable especially course work in basic electronics to include solid State and digital devices OR two years experience in servicing electronic equipment may be substituted for the formal education.

Additional Requirements: Possession of a valid Oregon's driver's license by time of appointment. A background security check by the County Sheriff.
