Reserve Deputy work consists of augmenting the Deputy Sheriff classification within the Law Enforcement Division of the Sheriff’s Office in the areas of road patrol, river patrol, and community service. Reserve Deputies are a supplemental resource for the investigation, and prevention of criminal activity, and the enforcement of statutes. Reserve Deputies patrol in a radio equipped car, boat or on foot, and they have the authority to arrest, and issue citations for crimes and violations.   

 
This classification is primarily distinguished from a Deputy Sheriff by two characteristics.  Reserve Deputy Sheriff is not a paid position   and the Reserve Deputy is limited to a supportive role in the sheriff’s Office unless special circumstances exist.

 To Qualify:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience and Training: Must be 21 years of age, a US citizen and possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment. Must be willing/able to work shifts, pass a comprehensive background, a physical and a psychological examination as well as a command staff, oral board interview.

This position requires a combination of sitting/standing/walking ranging from 6-10 hours per day. Longer shifts, running and stairs are required as needed.  The work environment is usually outdoors, in a motorized vehicle/boat but some assignments require work both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather conditions.

 



 

 The Application Packet:

A standard Multnomah County Employment Application and a completed Supplemental Questionnaire, submitted on-line or in hardcopy.  Any additional pages of job history information which are attached to the application form must be submitted in the same format as the Employment Application.

 Supplemental Information:
Background Investigation:  A background investigation includes a review of personal and employment references, credit report, driving and criminal records and a face-to-face interview with a Background Investigator.  It should be noted that information obtained in the background investigation is confidential and is not accessible to applicants or to any person outside of a law enforcement background investigation process.
 
The following elements of a candidate’s background, if disclosed as the result of interview, investigation and/or self-disclosure, will automatically result in a termination of the exam process:
 
• As an adult, being convicted of a felony crime.
• Conviction of a Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) within the last   three years, or more than one DUII.
• Present inability to legally drive in the State of Oregon.
• Dishonorable discharge from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Recent (within five (5) years of application) or ongoing affiliation with, and/or support of an organization or group, which advocates the violent overthrow of the United States Government.
• As an adult, selling, producing or financing the production or sale of illegal controlled substances.
• Discharge from another law enforcement or corrections agency for cause that would be basis for discharge from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
• Evidence that the applicant has willfully provided false or misleading information during the application process, in the written application or statement of personal history, or has attempted to gain unfair advantage during any phase of the testing or application process.
• Not certifiable by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
• Failure to meet minimum educational/training requirements.
• Failure to provide proof (documentation) of U.S. citizenship.

The following factors, or any combination, may serve as a basis for a termination of the exam process:

• Backgrounded by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office within the last year with a recommendation not to hire.
• As an adult, confinement in a correctional institution resulting from convictions totaling more than six (6) months.
• Unfavorable recommendations(s) on the part of references or past or present employers.
