The Police Assistant performs a variety of administrative and relatively minor enforcement duties under general supervision. This is an hourly position limited to approximately 19 hours per week and does not include fringe benefits.

Due to the nature of the work, before being hired candidates are subject to a background investigation including fingerprinting.

Police Assistants are limited to working 1,000 hours annually.

 DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Police Department utilizes hourly employees for a variety of relatively minor enforcement positions. These duties include assignments such as; parking enforcement officer, animal control assistant, fingerprint clerk, permit clerk, and other similar support assignments. Skills include the ability to maintain and submit reports and records as required; complete reports and citations accurately; read and write at an acceptable level; follow and interpret written
instructions. Individuals hired will be required to wear a uniform which is provided by the Police Department.

 SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Police Assistant are supervised by Management Staff.

 ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS:
Essential an other important responsilbilites and duties may inlcude, but are not limited to the following:

Monitor city streets and enforce parking laws and regulations applicable to non-moving vehicles and issue citations.

Receive and respond to complaints and reports of routine parking incidents from the public.

Maintain records related to work performed.

Perform administrative duties to include typing, filing, photocopying, answering phones and reception duties.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

Practices and techniques to achieve favorable public relations and appearance that projects a positive public image Procedures and techniques used for working with the public in a tactful manner.

General office procedures and report writing techniques.
 
Ability to:

Communicate in a clear and concise manner.

Think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.

Follow directions, both written and oral.

Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.

Accurately maintain records.

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Must be a minimum 18 years of age by the final filing date.

Must not have have any felony convictions.

Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License and have an acceptable driving record.

Must be able to read and write at an acceptable level, requiring the ability to follow and interpret written instructions, and complete reports and citations accurately.

 PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on assignment, may be assigned to an office or field environment.  Police Assistants assigned to Parking Enforcement are required to operate a motorized four-wheeled parking enforcement vehicle.
