The Director of Human Resources is the chief human resource officer for the university responsible for administering the university's human resource program and overseeing all functional areas within the HR office including: classification, compensation, recruitment/selection (classified and unclassified), performance management, progressive discipline, leave management, benefits administration, worker's compensation, unemployment, collective bargaining, professional development and training, HR systems management, and payroll. The Director acts as a university wide resource in the area of labor relations and collective bargaining. The Director has primary responsibility for consultation with administrators and employees regarding labor relations, for interpreting and administering ten labor agreements/personnel plans negotiated by the Office of the Chancellor and Minnesota Management & Budget. The Director assists in processing and resolving all employment disputes, internal and external. The Director serves as a member of the Expanded Cabinet and assists the university in its overall management efforts. The Director serves as a representative of the university to the Office of the Chancellor, Minnesota Management & Budget, the Attorney General's Office and other external entities (e.g. EEOC, MDHR) on matters related to employment. The Director also supervises the HR office including its staff and manages its resources.

 Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with emphasis in employment law, labor and industrial relations, business administration, or related field.
  • Seven (7) years combined experience in labor relations and human resources.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with grievance and appeals processes.
  • Broad experience in all areas of human resource management including: classification, compensation, recruitment/selection, performance management, progressive discipline, leave management, benefits administration, worker's compensation, unemployment, collective bargaining, professional development and training, HR systems management and payroll.
  • Supervisory and managerial experience required in budgeting, strategic planning, affirmative action and diversity.

 Other Considerations:
  • Master's degree or equivalent preferred with emphasis in same fields as above.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Ability to interpret policy and labor agreements, and handle grievance processes and complaint resolution.
  • Ability to creatively problem solve.
  • Ability to build relationships with various constituent groups on and off campus.
  • Strong listening, communication and persuasive skills.
  • A commitment to increasing and retaining diversity among faculty and staff.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Ability to effectively serve as representative of the university to external constituents.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
