Seeking career-minded applicants to serve as Public Safety Communications Specialist at the Lynchburg 911 Center. Responsibilities: Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire and emergency medical service. Gathering information from callers during crisis situations. Handle stressful situations for an extended period of time. Managing the resonses of public safety personnel and equipment. Requires rotating shift work including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Applicants must be able to type 45 words per minute or more. |

Essential Duties:
|
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, ambulance, rescue and public works; • Assesses call quickly, obtaining crucial and pertinent information, frequently from hysterical or irate callers; classifies and prioritizes problem, determines and coordinates appropriate response by emergency personnel and equipment; • Monitors units and maintains status of each to effectively coordinate response; • Handles time-sensitive and confidential information, determining dissemination of same; • Operates various complex, state-of-the-art communications equipment, such as nationwide criminal information network, 800 MHz regional radio system, Windows NT based computer aided dispatch system, Modular ANI/ALI Retrieval System (MAARS), Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), and Motorola paging system; • Sends, receives, disseminates messages to and from other agencies and jurisdictions; • Executes extensive file searches and updates relative to location history, hazard information and record management data; • Makes appropriate notifications, such as alarm notifications, wrecker service, etc., at the units' request. ADDITIONAL DUTIES • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery. • Provides testimony in criminal court proceedings; • Maintains security of the Emergency Communications facility; • Coordinates daily with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the National Warning System (NAWAS). SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities. |

Must pass a polygraph examination and thorough background/credit investigation to be considered for employment. Ability to be certified by Commonwealth of Virginia as Telecommunicator through successful completion of state mandated basic Telecommunicator course Ability to obtain valid V.C.I.N certification
