|
Performs Database Administration (DBA) duties for SQL-based applications; monitors and protects database systems, resolves problems, and upgrades database and applications. This is a full-time, regular, FLSA exempt position which involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. |

Duties and Responsibilities:
|
- Assures the overall integrity, security and reliability of the SQL database systems; evaluates and analyzes SQL database issues, and recommends and implements solutions; manages and maintains databases performance tuning of SQL, indexes and databases in general; performs quality control audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper usage of data in tables and various support tools, such as database dictionaries.
- Reviews database design and integration of systems, including client/servers, mainframes, etc., and makes recommendations; assesses database capacity and utilization trends, and recommends hardware improvements; monitors utilization and re-organizes database as required to enhance performance and assure maximum uptime; performs ongoing technical tuning of the database systems to optimize performance; performs database trouble-shooting to diagnose system problems; identifies, resolves and repairs problems within scope of authority.
- Monitors database environment, access, security, functionality and utilization; resolves traffic, security, and access issues; assures optimum database performance, system integrity and maximum uptime; installs and configures database hardware, software and upgrades; installs and tests patches and new versions of the database and applications.
- Plans and implements backup and recovery of the database as needed; manages database changes, reference data changes, and menu changes; prepares and updates technical documentation.
- Provides technical support and advice on database application utilization and integration with other systems; writes special SQL applications to create, modify and update reports, and translate data; trains City staff as needed; identifies hardware and software needs, and recommends improvements.
- May establish and maintain security and integrity controls. May formulate policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management, and monitors transaction activity and utilization. Prepares and/or presents various special and recurring reports.

Minimum Qualifications:
|
Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information technology or related field AND two (2) year’s experience in database administration, one (1) year of which should be experience with administration of Microsoft, SQL Server. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Licenses/Certification(s) Valid Class D driver’s license may be required or preferred. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies. Professional certifications in Microsoft, Oracle and MySQL relational database management system (RDBMS) are preferred. |

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General Knowledge of: Principles and practices of database administration, including data communications protocols and topologies, computer components and peripherals; system access and security guidelines and procedures; hardware and software troubleshooting techniques in a database environment; the design and integration of relational databases, database operating systems and communications systems, and other technical applications; business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications; City organization, operations, policies and procedures. Ability to: Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands; communicate effectively in verbal and written forms; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and customers; analyze and model multi-functional data flows and infrastructure requirements; interpreting technical instructions and analyzing complex variables; exercise initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; responding effectively to customer service requests. Skills in: Analyzing database issues, evaluating alternatives, and making logical recommendations based on findings; researching, analyzing and evaluating computer database applications, procedures and techniques, including data attribute management; installing, maintaining, modifying, and upgrading database systems; identifying and resolving computer database security problems in a multiple operating system environment; using SQL and object-oriented programming languages for RDBMS; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands; interpreting technical instructions and analyzing complex variables; using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; effective oral and written communication; establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers. |
