Performs skilled Master Electrician work to provide a safe and reliable electrical environment in the City's buildings/premises. Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Inspects and troubleshoots systems; tests, locates problems, and repairs electrical circuits. Reads sketches and blueprints. Schedules and responds to problems as reported. Sets and/or revises priorities as needed.

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of installation of emergency back-up generators.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of electrical code requirements as they relate to electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Knowledge of first aid measures applicable to victims of electric shock.
  • Skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the electrical trade.
  • Skilled in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
  • Ability to make routine estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to work from drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
  • Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Ability to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.


  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside and outside a stockroom or warehouse and is exposed to a variety of weather conditions such as excessive heat and humidity, dry atmosphere, excessive cold and inclement weather, excessive noise/intermittent, excessive dampness or chill, and slippery uneven walking surfaces. Work is exposed to dangerous and unusual environmental stress, contagious infectious disease and irritating chemicals, constant noise, fumes, smoke, gas, dust, grease, oils, radiant electrical energy, vibrations, solvents, and dirt. Work with protective devices, around moving objects or vehicles, around machines with moving parts/objects, around moving objects or vehicles, working below ground, on ladders or scaffolding, and hands on water. Capable of working closely with others or alone, working long or irregular working hours, shift work which may include weekends, and traveling by car or van. Ability to operate motor vehicles, light to heavy lifting under 24 pounds to 45 pounds and over, light to heavy carrying under 15 pounds to 45 pounds and over, straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, repeated bending, operate mechanical and office equipment, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, crouching, standing, sitting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, pushing, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching above shoulders, and walking. Ability to see, write, read, count, identify shade of color, depth perception and hearing is needed to perform essential functions.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, schedules and assigns work to subordinate electricians engaged in electrical repair and maintenance, checks and approves work, and carries out evaluations of subordinates.
  • Maintains working knowledge of electrical code requirements as they relate to electrical wiring and equipment throughout the City.
  • Installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, controllers, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems.
  • Tests, locates, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces defective parts in motors, generators, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, contractors, switches, and other fixtures and appliances.
  • Maintains a stock of selected electrical supplies; prepares reports and maintains records.
  • May service, repair, and maintain lighting, power, heating, and traffic lights.
  • Advises individuals responsible for appliance, bulb, ballast, and light fixture repair.
  • Performs related work as required.
  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    High school diploma or G.E.D.
    -AND-
    At least five (5) years of responsible electrical work experience.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Master Electrician's License is required.

    Valid Texas Driver's License*
    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.


    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
