Serves as group leader to a small number of laborers; participates in the general maintenance of parks facilities and grounds; instructs and trains employees in proper methods and procedures; reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion for compliance with standards; ensures all park equipment is accounted for at the end of each day's work.

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of general building and grounds maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to instruct, train, and monitor the work of employees performing building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Ability to inspect employee's work for compliance with acceptable standards.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
  • Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside a stockroom or warehouse, and outside exposed to a variety of weather conditions and outdoor elements such as: unknown & dangerous conditions, unusual environmental stress, contagious infectious disease, irritating chemicals, excessive heat, humidity, dampness/ chill, cold/inclement weather, dry atmosphere, slippery/uneven walking surfaces, grease, oils, dust, dirt, vibration (pneumatic), constant/excessive/intermittent noise, silica, asbestos, fumes, smoke, gases, radiant/ electrical energy, and solvents. Capable of working with protective devices, closely with others and/or alone. Work involves traveling in vehicle, shift work/weekends, long or irregular work hours, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, working around moving objects or vehicles, working on ladders or scaffolding, working below ground, and working with hands in water. Work requires operation of motor vehicle, and mechanical equipment; reaching above shoulders, pulling hand over hand, repeated bending, simple & dual simultaneous grasping, straight pulling, crawling, twisting, standing, sitting, walking, crouching, kneeling, stooping, pushing, climbing stairs & ladders, and light to heavy carrying & lifting (15 - 45 Ibs & over). Ability to see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, and hearing is needed to perform essential functions.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates, assigns, monitors, and participates in building and cemetery ground maintenance activities; instructs and trains employees the proper methods and procedures; reviews work in progress and upon completion checks for compliance with standards.
  • Receives work orders from the supervisor; checks and picks-up equipment; transports crews and equipment to designated areas and follows through with work orders.
  • Picks-up trash from different areas and arranges for transportation to the City landfill.
  • Cuts grass when needed.
  • Ensures all equipment checked out of the warehouse is returned at the end of the day.
  • Picks-up equipment needed for special projects from the compound.
  • Checks sites for vandalism and broken equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate reports regarding status of repairs and maintenance performed by the crew.
  • Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    High School Diploma or G.E.D.

    -OR-

    Two (2) years of City of Laredo full-time employment experience.

    -AND-

    Three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience performing grounds and facility maintenance work.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Valid Texas Driver License*

    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained prior to employment.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.


    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
