Performs a variety of maintenance and cleaning functions for buildings and grounds; performs semi-skilled work such as minor electrical and plumbing repairs; performs carpentry, painting and other maintenance work.

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of general buildings and grounds maintenance work practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general building cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to assist a skilled electrician, plumber, and carpenter in performing trade work.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records regarding repair work.
  • Ability to practice safety procedures for all equipment used.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow instruction and work independently with limited supervision.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside an office, stockroom or warehouse, and outside exposed to a variety of weather conditions and outdoor elements such as: unknown & dangerous conditions, unusual environmental stress, contagious infectious disease, irritating chemicals, excessive heat, humidity, cold/inclement weather, dry atmosphere, slippery/uneven walking surfaces, grease, oils, dust, dirt, vibration (pneumatic), constant/excessive/intermittent noise, and solvents. Capable of working with protective devices, closely with others and/or alone. Work involves light traveling in vehicle, shift work/weekends, long or irregular work hours, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, working around moving objects or vehicles, working on ladders or scaffolding, and working with hands in water. Work requires operation of motor vehicle, office equipment, and mechanical equipment; reaching above shoulders, pulling hand over hand, repeated bending, simple & dual simultaneous grasping, straight pulling, crawling, twisting, standing, sitting, walking, crouching, kneeling, stooping, pushing, climbing stairs & ladders, and light to heavy carrying & lifting (15 - 45 Ibs & over). Ability to see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, and hearing is needed to perform essential functions.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General building and ground maintenance work.
  • Maintains all equipment used to perform work.
  • Drives truck to haul trash.
  • Paints the walls and fixtures; moves chairs, tables to set-up special group meetings and trainings.
  • May perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Assists in the maintenance of air-conditioners and heating systems in accordance with accepted practices and procedures. Cleans and washes air-conditioner filters on a weekly basis.
  • Performs carpentry activities when needed including painting and masonry work as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts.
  • Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.

  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    High School Diploma or G.E.D.

    -AND-

    Two (2) years of work experience performing general buildings and grounds maintenance work.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Valid Texas Drivers License*

    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.


    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
