Performs routine public health food management inspection work, provides disease investigation and conducts food borne, water borne, and surveillance monitoring in the environmental health field in accordance with established policies and procedures; prepares accurate and complete reports of inspection findings.

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental sanitation, structure and functions of public health organizations and community inter-relationships.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate inspection reports and records.
  • Ability to enforce city ordinances regarding environmental health and pollution control.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established polices and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Ability to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.


  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside and outside a office, stockroom, or warehouse exposed dry atmosphere conditions, and outdoor elements such as dust and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Work involves working with protective devices, working rotating shifts/weekends, working extended workdays outside the regular working hours, capable of working closely with others or alone, and travel by car 90% of the time. Work requires straight pulling, pulling hand over head, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, standing, sitting, twisting, kneeling, stooping, pushing, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs, walking, reaching above shoulder, light carrying under 15 pounds, and light lifting under 24 pounds. Ability to see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, hearing, operating office equipment, and operating motor vehicle is needed to perform essential functions of the job.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspects food establishments, tourist and trailer camps, institutions, schools, individual home water and sewage systems, dairies, milk and milk product plants, slaughter houses, foster homes, public swimming pools, day care centers, public water and sewage systems, food and meat processing plants, and housing surveys; ensures that inspections are conducted in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares written reports on inspection findings; outlines any violation of regulations; recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action; ensures the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of reports.
  • Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly, mosquito, and other vector control projects; applies techniques effective in controlling the same.
  • Conducts inspections and secures corrections and abatement on public health nuisance complaints.
  • Promotes public education in sanitary practices through individual contacts and through civic or other public meetings; projects a positive and professional image of the department.
  • Performs detailed investigation of food poison cases; prepares written report of investigation findings; recommends corrective measures; disposes of contaminated food in a proper manner.
  • Performs work in compliance with established policies and procedures; ensures the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the work.
  • Performs other duties assigned.
  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelor's Degree in Science from an accredited college or university.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Registration as a Sanitarian-in-Training in Texas must be secured within fifteen (15) months after employment.**

    **Continued employment is contingent on successfully obtaining required certification(s) and/or license(s) within the specified period of time indicated above from time of hire.

    Valid Texas Driver License*
    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained prior to employment.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.


    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
