Conducts laboratory tests in compliance with established policies and procedures including microbiology, serology, parasitology, water bacteriology and media preparation; records accurate and complete results; informs doctors of abnormal results in a timely manner. Complies with all lab certificate and quality assurance requirements (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments [CLIA], National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program [NELAP], Laboratory Response Network [LRN]).

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, parasitology, and water bacteriology.
  • Knowledge of the established procedures and techniques associated with conducting laboratory tests.
  • Ability to conduct laboratory tests with accurate results in a timely manner.
  • Ability to comply with rules and regulations governing laboratory testing.
  • Ability to work independently and with little supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position


  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside and outside a office, stockroom, or warehouse exposed dry atmosphere conditions, and outdoor elements such as dust and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Work involves working with protective devices, working rotating shifts/weekends, working extended workdays outside the regular working hours, capable of working closely with others or alone, and travel by car 1% of the time. Work requires straight pulling, pulling hand over head, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, standing, sitting, twisting, kneeling, stooping, pushing, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs, walking, reaching above shoulder, light carrying under 15 pounds, and light lifting under 24 pounds. Ability to see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, hearing, operating office equipment, and operating motor vehicle is needed to perform essential functions of the job.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs microbiology procedures to include quality control, testing, and maintenance of equipment; reads temperatures of incubators, water baths, and refrigerators.
  • Performs standard routine procedures in general bacteriology, enteric, respiratory, gonorrhea, blood, stains, vagina/wet preps, mycology and TB; reads plates of cultures that are grown; identifies organisms by using appropriate reagent and/or equipment available following laboratory guidelines; documents and reports results; performs follow-up as needed for each organism; tabulates and records the daily tabulation for microbiology.
  • Performs standard routine serological procedures testing for syphilis, serology, rheumatoid factor, infection mononucleosis, salmonella serology and shigella serology; performs quality control on the appropriate kit used; documents quality control results of positive and negative controls on appropriate log books; records room temperature if necessary; performs tests on previously inspected and approves samples; documents and reports results; documents abnormal results in the appropriate file; tabulates results on the daily tabulation sheets.
  • Performs standard routine parasitology procedures; checks tests to be performed on each stool specimen; prepares stool specimens previously approved and inspected for testing; identifies any parasite if present; documents and reports results; documents abnormal results in log book for parasitology; tabulates results in daily tabulation sheets.
  • Performs standard routine for water bacteriology tests; prepares quality control testing for water samples; performs necessary test requested for each water sample submitted; follows exact procedure guidelines established by the State Lab in Austin, Texas; documents and reports results.
  • Performs standard routine procedures for hematology tests; follows procedure manual to start instrument; inspects instrument for proper pressure and readings; changes date on instrument on daily basis; starts instrument and observes background count result; documents in appropriate log books; determines if machine is ready to begin running tests; documents and reports all tests conducted; notifies doctors of abnormal test results; tabulates and records daily tabulation for hematology.
  • Performs standard routine procedure for urinalyses; prepares control to be run to check instrument and reagent strips used for the actual testing; documents and records on the quality control check up daily; documents daily on the check stick control used; runs urine samples in order; verifies tests that are positive for protein, bilirubin, and glucose on a urine sample; documents and records results.
  • Performs standard routine procedure for urine pregnancy tests; performs quality control on appropriate kit; performs positive and negative controls; performs tests on approved and inspected urine samples for pregnancy tests; documents and reports results; documents any abnormal result in proper log book; notifies doctor of any abnormal results.
  • Performs standard routine procedure for clinical chemistry; prepares control necessary for testing; performs maintenance and quality control to the chemistry analyzer; documents maintenance check-ups and quality control in appropriate log books; prepares log sheet of patient's tests to be analyzed.
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory instruments in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs necessary clerical work involved in receiving samples for lab. Takes Pus for necessary media and solutions.
  • Trains and monitors work of medical lab students when completing their clinical practicum in the lab.
  • Complies with all certificates, quality assurance, city, lab, CLIA(Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), NELAP (National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program) requirements.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    Two year college or technical school degree in Applied Science or a related field.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Registration in one of the two societies listed: American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) is desirable.

    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
