Provides general dentistry care within the requirements of contractual agreements and in accordance with all dentistry patient protocols, State and Federal Funding agencies and other regulatory requirements (Medicaid, Title V, CHIP) and in accordance with the policies and procedures set forth by the City of Laredo Health Department. Teams with other primary and preventive care services to ensure comprehensive preventive and acute dental care.

 Job Description:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current dentistry procedures.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws pertaining to public health and dental care.
  • Knowledge of dental clinical care, dental clinical operations and management.
  • Knowledge of structure and function of current social and economical problems pertaining to public health.
  • Ability to provide acute dental care in all phases of clinical dentistry with emphasis on children’s dentistry.
  • Ability to supervise dental care ancillary personnel.
  • Ability to coordinate prevention and care needs assessment to ensure dental health care access.
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages and the general public in a professionally, tactfully and courteously manner.
  • Ability to team and coordinate with other dental care providers.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language.


  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed inside an office; working closely with others and alone; traveling by car 2% of the time; working with protective devices; working in a dry atmosphere. Work involves working extended workdays outside the regular working hours, working in slippery/uneven walking surfaces, straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, operating mechanical equipment, crouching, standing, sitting, kneeling, pushing, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching above shoulder, climbing stairs, walking, light carrying under 15 pounds, and light lifting under 24 pounds. Ability to operate office equipment and a motor vehicle, see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, and hear needed to perform essential functions.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides chairside dental acute and preventive care services.
  • Assume quality care for all patients of CLHD (City of Laredo Health Department).
  • Adhere to the highest standard of dental practices, ethics and professionalism at all times.
  • Plans, schedules and assigns clinical work as well as manages the patients.
  • Instructs and trains Dental assistants and dental support staff accordingly.
  • Assures all supplies and equipment are appropriate for clinical care.
  • Maintain an affiliation with the professional groups, dental associations, and dental organizations, as per policies and procedures established by the City of Laredo Health Department and represent the Health Department at all meetings of these associations and organizations as needed or as directed by Health Director.
  • Prepares budget requests for clinic operations, including salaries, capital expenses and travel; monitors budget expenditures throughout the year.
  • Compiles and submits data necessary for monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports as required for both City and funding sources.
  • Provides emergency call as scheduled by the department director in accordance with protocols established in that regard and common and standard practices.
  • Participation in community health events, such as school screenings, health fairs, social and community events, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  •  Minimum Qualifications:
    Doctorate of Dental Science or Dental Surgery degree from an accredited dental school approved by the American Dental Association.
    -AND-
    Three (3) years of professional clinical dental experience in practicing dentistry.

     Valid Licenses and Certifications:
    Valid Texas Drivers License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)*
    *If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.

    Must have reliable transportation willing to use on official business.



    As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.


    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.


    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
