The responsibilities of this position include performing skilled day-to-day operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of facility heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and related building systems.

WHO MAY APPLY: These four (4) positions are open to all qualified King County career service employees and the public. This recruitment is an effort to fill four (4) full-time career service positions and to create a list of competitive candidates to fill similar vacancies in the Building Services Section that may occur throughout the year.
  
WORK LOCATION:  Work locations may include the Maleng Regional Justice Center (Kent), the King County Courthouse Complex (downtown), the King County Correctional Facility (downtown), and other County owned/maintained outlying buildings.
 
WORK SCHEDULE: These positions are overtime eligible and work a 40-hour week

 Job Duties:
  • Monitor, maintain and repair direct digital controls (DDC).
  • Monitor and repair heating and air-conditioning equipment using computerized console controls.
  • Make adjustments necessary to compensate for temperature change or equipment failure.
  • Inspect and adjust water levels, steam pressures, lubricants, coolants, drive belt and bearing operation, filters, etc., to ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on large commercial heating and cooling systems and controls for those systems.
  • Adjust and calibrate large commercial heating and cooling systems and controls for those systems.
  • Conduct refrigeration maintenance and service.

 Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
  • Two years of experience, and demonstrated ability in operating, troubleshooting and repairing large-scale industrial, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, including boilers and pneumatic/digital (DDC) control systems; be qualified at the journey level on computer, mechanical or compressor repair and pneumatics; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicants must have a Grade Three Steam Engineer License, a Refrigeration Operating Engineer’s License, and Universal EPA Technician Certification.

 Supplemental Information:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have a Grade Three Steam Engineer License, a Refrigeration Operating Engineer’s License, and Universal EPA Technician Certification. Applicants must be available for call in and call back, for which appropriate premiums will be paid. At the time of the appointment, the candidate must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles. The selected applicant will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination and a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention.
 
Candidates who do not possess the minimum qualifications for journey-level work may be appointed to the Operating Engineer I classification, and expected to obtain all journey-level qualifications (which include Grade #3 Steam Engineer and Refrigeration Operating Engineer licenses) within twelve (12) months, as a condition of continued employment.
 
SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be screened for clarity, completeness, and minimum qualifications. Candidates who wish to be considered for Operating Engineer I must complete the supplemental question regarding their experience. Applications will then be screened for competitive quality. The most competitive candidates may be invited to a panel interview and a written and practical exercise. Finalists may interview with the supervisor. Reference checks will be conducted prior to any offer of employment.
