The responsibilities of this classification include identifying fingerprints by conducting a thorough examination, researching fingerprints and related files to make identifications; storing and retrieving criminal information using specialized computer applications; communicating with law enforcement agencies on matters relating to criminal information; and fingerprinting for the purposes of establishing or correcting identity problems, e.g. identify theft, or identities in question. This recruitment will establish an employment list for Tenprint Examiner (valid for one year) to fill current and future vacancies throughout the Sheriff's Office. Work Location: This position is located at the Tenprint Unit for the King County Regional AFIS Program in the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle. Work Schedule: Typical work hours are 40 hours per week. This unit operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, including holidays. Applicants must be able to work any shift. Assigned shifts, days off, and work locations may vary at management discretion, and rotate on a quarterly basis. Additional hours may be necessary to respond to workload needs, which may include evenings and weekends. This position is overtime eligible. Union Membership: Positions in this classification are represented by the Public Safety Employees Union (PSEU). Testing Information: This position requires a technical test that is proctored in Seattle, WA, only. No out-of-area proctoring of the test will be conducted. |

Job Duties:
|
- Perform fingerprint, name, alias and warrant searches of criminals, applicants, juveniles, the deceased and others using Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to discover identity.
- Perform fingerprint comparisons using rolled, flat or palm print impressions; analyze and resolve identification problems.
- Prepare written reports and detailed records; provide and maintain statistical data including performing court ordered fingerprint maintenance such as expunging, vacating or sealing conviction and arrest records.
- Fingerprint subjects for the purposes of establishing identity or correcting identity issues.
- Prepare testimony and testify as an expert witness regarding the identification of specific fingerprints.
- Recover, photograph, package and preserve evidence at assigned scene; transport DNA and other confidential material and evidence maintaining chain of custody rules.
- May be required to travel to hospitals to take fingerprints from incapacitated individuals.
- May be required to fingerprint the deceased at the King County Medical Examiner's Office.
- Train less experienced staff; may provide educational presentations for citizen’s academies, local schools, and tours of the units.
- Maintain qualifications as an expert; keep apprised of relevant court cases, current publications, and professional journals; attend professional trainings and conferences.
- Research and make recommendations for procedural changes.
- May act as point of contact for detectives requesting crime scene fingerprint processing, including coordinating callout response and keeping detailed notes regarding methods used, and maintaining chain of custody rules.
- May provide oversight to vendor service engineers and technical staff to troubleshoot issues.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
|
- Knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures pertaining to law enforcement and detention and Data Privacy regulations
- Knowledge of detention records system, warrant systems, Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), Live Scan fingerprint capture system, and computerized criminal history system
- Knowledge of basic photography to photograph evidence at crime scenes.
- Ability to use current computerized technology for collecting, searching, and identifying fingerprints and taking photographs
- Skill in obtaining quality prints from potentially difficult subjects including taking fingerprints from incapacitated individuals
- Skill in making identifications involving the most difficult fingerprints due to quality or other skin conditions
- Skill in applying modern methods in comparing and making tenprint identifications accurately
- Skill in using ink and computer scanning equipment to fingerprint individuals and produce quality photographic images; skill in troubleshooting fingerprint computer hardware and software issues
- Ability to use specialized databases and current office word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email software programs; skill in using keyboard for both alpha and numeric characters with a high degree of accuracy
- Effective oral and written communication skills in English; with the ability to read and understand directions and record names and numbers accurately
- Experience in dealing courteously and effectively with a wide variety of people
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the ability to deal effectively with law enforcement personnel, a diverse population of inmates and the general public
- Experience in performing detailed clerical tasks with speed and completing work assignments with a high degree of accuracy
- Skill in maintaining confidentiality and following security procedures
