This is manual work cleaning, securing, and performing minor maintenance of public buildings and facilities.

Work involves responsibility for routine cleaning and maintenance; opening and closing facilities; and responsibility for maintaining the security of public facilities particularly during public functions. Assignments are received from a Facilities Janitorial Supervisor or Chief Operator and the incumbent is expected to work independently carrying out daily work assignments in accordance with established procedures. Additional guidance is received through training, Health Department rules and regulations, plus Departmental and City policies and procedures. Work is evaluated through inspections, observation of work performed, the appearance and condition of the facility assigned, and performance evaluations. No supervision is exercised over others.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work performed primarily inside except when picking up litter outside, driving to other facilities, or washing vehicles. Work exposes the employee to hazards associated with cleaning and disinfectant chemicals; occasionally blood and sewage; running motors and pumps; and traffic hazards. Protective equipment is required such as rubber gloves and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires the physical ability to bend, stoop and crawl while emptying or picking up trash; climb ladders to clean light fixtures; and the ability to push and pull mops and vacuums. Work also requires the ability to lift and carry heavy trash bags; and stand and walk for extended periods of time. Work may also require the ability to sit and operate a motor vehicle.

 Essential and Marginal Functions of Work:
Opens building for use by the public, secures buildings and facilities; inspects facilities for vandalism and equipment failures.

Utilizes chemicals and disinfectants to clean and sanitize commodes, restrooms, and waste cans; replenishes paper products, soap, toilet tissue and supplies; cleans water fountains.

Dusts, cleans and polishes furniture, wood, and metal work; cleans blinds; washes windows, walls, mirrors and counters.

Sweeps, mops, strips and buffs floors in rooms, hallways, elevators and stairways; vacuums carpets and walk off mats; cleans up oil and sewage off of floors when necessary.

Collects and disposes of all trash from offices and assigned areas; changes bags; ensures the removal of all trash from the facility.

Responsible for picking up and removing outside litter; cleans out ashtrays.

Utilizes a van, vacuum, various mops, dust pan, brooms, ringer bucket, buffer, cart and other related custodial equipment while performing essential functions.

May clean and/or maintain food for coffee serving areas or break rooms; washes dishes in all kitchenette areas; prepares coffee.

May perform minor preventative maintenance on commodes and pipes; may wash cars and trucks.

Communicates with personnel in assigned facilities.

Requisitions paper and cleaning supplies; restocks inventory supplies.

Reports leaks or problems in assigned facilities.

Prepares meeting rooms and equipment, arranges chairs and tables; turns on heat and lights; assists the public in use of the buildings.

Transports supplies to other facilities for co-workers.

May deliver newspapers to various personnel.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Some knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment, and procedures.

Ability to perform manual and semi-skilled work while cleaning, securing, or performing minor maintenance on public buildings and facilities.

Ability to work independently while performing essential functions.

Ability to assist the public courteously.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Ability to lift and move heavy furniture and trash bags.

Ability to use cleaning materials effectively.

 Minimum Education, Training and Experience:
Work requires the ability to read and write and some janitorial experience. A high school diploma or GED is desired; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

A valid Alabama driver's license is required if job assignment requires the operation of a motor vehicle to travel from facility to facility.
