This is manual work requiring considerable physical strength and endurance. Work is usually performed under the immediate supervision of a superior and instructions are received at the beginning of each new job. Constant supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks. Work is reviewed through observation of results. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outside in adverse weather conditions involving rain, snow, heat, and cold. The Employee is exposed to smoke, fumes, high noise levels, vibrations, dust, chemicals, dangerous and offensive fumes and odors, and hazards associated with working around traffic, solid waste, sewage, ditches, and heavy equipment. Safety equipment is required such as a hard hat, gloves, hard sole shoes, safety glasses, rain suits, ear plugs and back support belts. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time; perform continuous repetitious lifting of heavy tools, containerized and non-containerized debris, materials, and equipment for extended periods of time; and the ability to repetitiously climb on and off machinery. Work also involves bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, turning, and squatting while performing essential functions; and the ability to operate saws and equipment associated with the work.
Essential and Marginal Functions of Work:
Performs one or more of the following essential functions. Sweeps street, gutters, garages, and alleys; loads dirt from streets into a truck; removes trash from streets, garages, and sidewalks by hand. Does pick and shovel work in grading, patching, and maintaining improved and unimproved streets; sweeps, paints, and applies hot mix and seals; spreads sand or stone chips by hand or mechanical spreader on asphalt or tar; excavates streets to grade and loads materials into trucks; spreads gravel, stone, or other construction materials; performs a wide variety of similar tasks in the reconstruction, repair, and maintenance of streets. Cuts grass with small mowers; trims and picks grass after cutting. Dig graves and assists in setting foundations and headstones. Provides manual labor involving the collection of containerized and non-containerized solid waste, trash, and debris; lifts and places solid waste in packer; moves limbs, debris, and other types of waste in place for collection; may operate a rear packer to compress debris; may ride on rear platform during collection route; cleans up area after collection is made; inspects area for loose debris and spillage; assists driver with backing up; directs traffic; notifies driver of possible hazardous wastes; advises driver of operational malfunctions involving the packer; performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning on equipment and vehicles; interacts with the public regarding disposal policies and procedures. Assists with laying and replacing pipes for drainage and sewage; installs french drains; assists with repairing manhole brick, mortar, rings, and covers; digs and shovels gravel and lime; mixes concrete; utilizes a pitchfork and shovel for dipping ditches; sets and shoots grade on ditches; builds drainage boxes and lays brick. Loads truck, ensure proper tools and equipment have been loaded; sets up traffic cones; flags traffic; ensures that all tools are cleaned and accounted for at the end of the day; cleans up job sites. Operates a truck, utilizes a demolition, ductile, skill and chain saws, ditch jacks, jack hammer, water pumps, blowers, shovel, sledge and claw hammer, roller, fork, pick, asphalt, concrete and other rakes, tamp, crew truck, back hoe, bobcat, rubber tire loader, cruz-aire, hydro-seeder, generator, asphalt burner, sealer, air compressor, concrete mixer, concrete finishing tools, hydraulic packer body, steam cleaner, small and medium mowers, push mowers, weedeater, dump bed, sod cutter, landscaping box, line sweeper, roller, and hand tools, while performing essential functions. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK: Builds and sets up barricades. Loads and spreads salt. Washes truck and equipment Performs minor building maintenance; cleans bathrooms and sweeps. Assists with landscaping. Paints buildings and porches. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Some knowledge of the common practices, methods, and materials used in maintenance, solid waste collection or construction. Some knowledge of the tool, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance; repair and installation of curbs, gutters, streets, or sewers. Some knowledge of traffic laws, barricade, and flagging policies and procedures. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse weather conditions. Ability to direct traffic and drivers at worksites. 6040 Ability to walk for extended periods of time blowing out cracks and sealing cracks. Ability to use hand and mechanical tools and equipment. Ability to communicate and convey information to the general public. Skill in the use of tools and equipment assigned.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma or GED is desired and some experience in performing heavy manual work; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Alabama driver’s license.
