Job Title: Police Officer (Lateral) - Police Department

Howard County Police Department is seeking certified Police Officers.

Employees usually work 2080 hours per year. Entry salary: $23.66/hourly; annual salary: $49,213. Excellent benefits package and retirement plan.

Test dates: August 22, September 19, October 24, November 21 and December 5, 2009 at 9 AM.

Test location: James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center, 2200 Scott Wheeler Dr., Marriottsville, MD 21104.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Essential Duties:
Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned or required.
Patrols an assigned beat being alert to unusual circumstances and initiating crime prevention and community service activities.
Investigates unusual occurrences and reports findings.
Check businesses to prevent criminal activity and maintain order in areas where the public congregates.
Responds to calls for services of both a criminal and noncriminal nature.
Enforces State law and County ordinances.
Prevents and detects criminal acts.
Protects crime scenes and investigates criminal offenses.
Transports apprehended individuals in accordance with departmental regulations.
Enforces traffic regulations and investigates vehicular collisions.
Assures proper flow of traffic.
Prepare reports as required.
Provides information to the public on crime prevention techniques.
Initiates problem solving and community oriented policing projects.

Qualified candidates must possess a current Maryland Police Training Commission Certification as a Police Officer.

Two years of experience in a full service police department preferred.

Elements of the selection process include:

• Personal History Questionnaire
• Panel Interview
• Polygraph Examination
• Background Investigation
• Psychological Screening
• Pre-placement Physical

The selection process may take 2-6 months, dependent upon Academy start dates.

Eligibility for re-application is evaluated on an individual basis and recommendations may be made during any phase of the selection process.
