Recruitment Number 209059 - Oahu Correctional Facilities Employment Only - The immediate vacancy is located at Halawa Correctional Facility.

 Duties Summary:
Independently develop, implement and evaluate individual educational plans for inmates confined in an adult correctional facility; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

 Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Your possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position. Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position. Note: Your calculation of experience must be based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks. Part-time experience must be pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Excess General Experience as described below or any other progressively responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience which provided knowledge and abilities comparable to those acquired in four years of successful study leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the required Education on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge and abilities.

The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clearly and comprehensively reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systematically.

General Experience: One and one-half years* of progressively responsible professional teaching experience which involved developing educational lesson plans; providing instruction to students; assessing students' progress and modifying educational plans to address level of progress. Such experience must have involved and demonstrated knowledge of the application of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials.

*One year of General Experience is defined as a school year approximately 180 "teacher duty" days or approximately 38 weeks per year.

Non-Qualifying Experience: Teaching work experience of general interest subjects such as dancing, ukulele, etc., which did not require the knowledge and application of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials, or which did not require assessment, evaluation and measurement of student progress is not qualifying.

Substitutions Allowed:
A. A bachelor's degree in education or professional diploma in education from an accredited college or university may be substituted for six months of General Experience.
B. A master's degree in education from an accredited college or university which provided knowledge of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials may be substituted for six months of General Experience.
C. A Ph.D. degree in education from an accredited college or university which provided knowledge of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials may be substituted for six months of General Experience.
D. A full-time teaching internship of at least one semester which involved developing educational lesson plans, providing instruction to students, assessing students' progress and modifying educational plans to address level of students' progress may be substituted for additional General Experience on the basis of one semester of full-time post-baccalaureate internship for six months of General Experience, provided that such experience involved and demonstrated knowledge of the application of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials.

License: A valid driver's license is required for some positions. For those positions requiring a driver's license, you must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Employment Referral: Qualified applicants will be referred to one central location for employment consideration. Persons hired will then be assigned to a correctional facility by the Department of Public Safety.
