Job Title: Recreation Coordinator
Salary: $21.76 - $23.99 Hourly

CLASS DEFINITION
Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising a variety of recreation programs, facilities, services, and special events for the community and perform other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This journey-level position is distinguished by the responsibility for developing and delivering community and recreation programs and services to the community.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Community Services Supervisor and exercises direct supervision over subordinate part-time and volunteer staff.

 Essential Duties:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the area of assignment, assist in the recommendation of user fees, scheduling systems, facility use requirements and other policies to ensure the efficient and effective use of facilities.
  • Perform a variety of public relations duties publicizing recreation programs and activities including preparing newsletters, flyers, pamphlets, and brochures.
  • Research, analyze, and compose a variety of written communication including letters, memoranda, reports, press releases, and grants.
  • Assist in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating staff; assign work activities; monitor work flow; and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including personal computer.
  • Meet with various professional and community groups promoting recreational and leisure activities, as well as, special events. May act as liaison and support staff to City Committees and attend related meetings.
  • Plans, develops and supervises leisure time activities for participants from pre-school to advanced age groups.
  • Plans special events, arts and crafts and cultural activities.
  • Plans seasonal aquatics program and youth and adult sports activities for year-round and seasonal programs.
  • Coordinates the reservation of public facilities, including ball field preparation, set-ups, take downs and cleaning.
  • Reviews proposals for new classes, processes applications for contract instructors and coordinates contract classes which may include the creation of quarterly activity guides.
  • Prepare and present written and oral reports.

    OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES
  • Maintain a variety of records, reports, and other documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  •  Qualifications Guidelines:
    QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINE

    EDUCATION:
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Recreation, Physical Education, Public Administration, or a related field is highly desirable.

    EXPERIENCE:
    One to two years of progressively responsible experience in recreation services, preferably in a municipal setting.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles, practices, and methods used in urban recreation, and human services.
  • Marketing practices and communication methods.
  • Facility scheduling and administration practices for recreation and community service programs.

    REQUISITE ABILITIES:
  • Coordinate, direct, and monitor program activities and special events.
  • Evaluate programs in terms of cost, efficiency, purpose and future needs and recommend changes as needed.
  • Must possess a strong customer service orientation and be a team player.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, computer equipment, and software including facility booking, program registration, and Microsoft office software.
  • English, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and the public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Gather data and make sound analyses and recommendations.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinate staff.
  • Plan effectively, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines.

    LICENSE REQUIRED:
    A valid California Class "C" driver's license.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
    Must be available to work some weekends and evenings.

    PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing; walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping, and bending; input data into a computer terminal; exposure to computer glare, vibrations, and pitch; ability to lift, carry, and move objects totaling approximately 25 pounds in weight; and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
