This is a continuous recruitment, and may close at any time. Oral interviews will take place on Thursday, January, 15, 2009. CLASS DEFINITION
A Firefighter assigned to Paramedic responds to fire alarms and other emergency medical calls providing basic and advanced medical aide at the scene of accidents, fires and other emergency situations, and performs other work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished by the highly technical knowledge required to provide basic and advanced medical care and treatment during an emergency situation. The incumbent must be able to rapidly assess a situation and determine a course of care to be given to the injured or ill patient.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Fire Captain.

 Essential Duties:
  • Responds to emergency medical incidents; diagnose medical problems; administer basic and advanced medical care and treatment to injured or ill patients while maintaining direct radio communication with a doctor or nurse at the base hospital.
  • Respond to fires, connect and lay hose lines, enter burning areas or buildings carrying hose lines and directing water on fires; perform ventilating, salvage and clean-up operations as needed.
  • Maintain fire and medical equipment at all times.
  • Completes a variety of reports documenting emergency medical care rendered including pre-hospital care reports, incident reports, drug logs, etc.

    OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
  • Assist in conducting fire prevention inspections of businesses within the City.
  • Assist in the training of new paramedic employees.
  • Assist in the housekeeping and maintenance of the fire station.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  •  Qualifications Guidelines:
    EDUCATION:
  • High School graduation or equivalent.

    EXPERIENCE:
    Candidate must have successfully passed probation and completed at least one year verifiable, paid full-time experience with a municipal Fire Department.

    REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:
  • Principles and practices of firefighting, the incident command system; and emergency vehicle maintenance and operation.
  • Principles of advanced emergency medicine; medical terminology; safe emergency work practices and infectious control procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of recordkeeping and reporting.
  • The geography of the City of Fountain Valley, local hazards, hydrant, and water main locations.

    REQUISITE ABILITIES:
  • Perform a variety of paramedic procedures including first aide, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardiac defibrillation, intraveneous catheterization and administration of injections.
  • Effective manage an emergency medical scene.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, City officials, and the general public.
  • Operate a personal computer and use applicable software.
  • Deal firmly and courteously with the public.
  • Exercise independent and sound judgment in evaluating situations and making quick, effective, and reasonable decisions.
  • Write clear and accurate reports, correspondence, and record data.
  • Deal with complex, fast paced and emergency situations.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
  • A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License is required.
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT) Certification.
  • Possession of a valid California State Paramedic License by the date of appointment.
  • Orange County Paramedic Accreditation by the date of appointment.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
  • California State Certified Firefighter I or graduation from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved Fire Academy or equivalent Fire Academy.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours or long periods of time without relief, including but not limited to 24 hour shifts, overtime, emergency call back, shift work, holidays, and weekends.

    PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of locations to include on-site work at calls and incidents, in a City vehicle and in the Fire Stations. When working outdoors, may be exposed to the elements; may work under damp or dry conditions; crouch, sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, twist, grasp, drag, lift, and carry items weighing 45 pounds or more; may be exposed to dust, chemicals, solvents, grease/oil, fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise; meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision including the ability to distinguish colors, speaking, hearing, dexterity, and use of both hands and legs appropriate to the duties to be performed. May administer first aide and in an emergency, pushing, pulling, dragging, and moving individuals and/or others weighing 150 pounds or more. May be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids or communicable diseases. Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing, sense of smell, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed with the ability to work irregular hours and schedules.
