Job Title: Certified Firefighter Trainee
Salary: $12.41 - $19.11 Hourly
$992.50 - $1,529.20 Biweekly
$2,150.41 - $3,313.26 Monthly
$25,804.87 - $39,759.11 Annually

Location: Various Locations within the City of El Paso, Texas
 

 
 
Candidate must have a High School Diploma or GED supplemented by completion of postsecondary Basic Firefighter and Basic Emergency Medical Technician courses.
Licenses and Certificates: Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state. Texas Class “B” Driver’s License Permit by time of entry into Academy. Must possess current Texas State Commission on Fire Protection Basic Structural Firefighter Certification and Texas Department of Health Basic Emergency Medical Technician Certification at time of application. Certifications must be current and in good standing with no deficiency status.
Special Requirements: Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age and meet El Paso Fire Department pre-appointment standards including a rigid background investigation and a comprehensive medical examination with drug screening.

 General Purpose:

Under immediate supervision, perform advanced El Paso Fire Academy departmental indoctrination training assignments to develop and specifically apply previously acquired knowledge, abilities and skills of a state certified Firefighter, and to become a locally credentialed Emergency Medical Technician, as required.

 Typical Duties:
Participate in classroom lectures, response simulations, live field exercises and other orientation activities, including rigorous physical preparation, written testing and performance evaluations. Involves: Study and practice, as qualified, job related structural firefighting and basic emergency medical care methods according to established department rules, regulations, protocols and standards including, but not limited to, fire and rescue tactics, patient care, safety and survival techniques, ladder operations and hose deployment, engine and ambulance operation and maintenance, self contained breathing apparatus use, hazardous materials awareness, station and company familiarization, computer and communications systems procedures, property salvage and security guidelines, and incident reporting and administrative recordkeeping. Respond to emergency incidents as instructed by the Training Chief.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the written examination.  Those who receive a passing score on the written examination will be invited to continue through the recruitment process.  This process includes our physical agility examination, preliminary screening, background investigation, and interview.

Please Note: Candidates must be successful at each stage to move forward through the process.  A pre-offer medical examination and drug screening will also be performed.
