Community Safety Volunteers are citizen volunteers who have an interest in law enforcement and who wish to assist the Sheriff’s Office in providing for the safety and security of their community. They partner with the Sheriff’s Office and support the efforts of sworn and civilian personnel. They assist the Sheriff’s Office in one or more of the following operational areas:

| Education/Experience/Minimum Requirements: | |
REQUIREMENTS – GENERAL: Community Safety Volunteers must meet the same individual requirements as applicants for Deputy: · Be 20 years of age or older at the time of application · Possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license · Never been convicted of a felony · No illegal drug use in the last three years · No alcohol related traffic offenses in the last five years · Pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and medical evaluation · Demonstrate strong inter-personal skills with emphasis on the ability to interact with people of all types, especially to empathize with those in need, and excellent listening skills · Demonstrate the ability to deal with and maintain the integrity of confidential information · Demonstrate maturity, excellent judgment, and the ability to operate within defined boundaries · Possess strong character traits including high personal standards, self-motivation, ethics, and integrity REQUIREMENTS – TECHNICAL SKILLS: Community Safety Volunteers should have certain basic technical skills because the Sheriff’s Office strives to maintain a state-of-the-art approach to fulfilling its mission. While not mandatory, demonstrated competency in following areas is a definite plus: · Basic computer skills to include familiarity with log on procedures, passwords, mouse movement, and reasonable typing skills · Familiarity with the internet, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software · Good writing and composition skills REQUIREMENTS – TIME COMMITMENT: Community Safety Volunteers must be able to attend a 10-week Academy which generally meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and 4 Saturdays during the 10-week period from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The exact dates are published on the CSV website. Upon graduation from the Academy, CSVs are required to complete 40 hours of ride-alongs with a CSV FTO (Field Training Officer) and Deputy FTO. These rides must be completed within the first two months following graduation. Thereafter, each CSV is required to volunteer an average minimum of 16 hours each month including attendance at monthly training meetings which are normally held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on the second Tuesday of every month. |

SELECTION PROCESS: To achieve the CSV designation, a citizen must receive clearance from the Department of Professional Standards after passing a comprehensive background investigation, and successfully completed all of the requirements of the Community Safety Volunteer Academy. The CSV will achieve a Level Status and Team Designation based upon the service delivery they select, level of training and number of volunteer hours. |
