This position provides professional nursing services to clients while in custody at the Jail and Juvenile Services Center. Under the direction of a Public Health Nurse, the position provides professional nursing assessments, delegated medical functions, health screenings, health education, and communication with the health care team.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
. Graduation from an accredited professional School of Nursing (Associate degree, Diploma or Baccalaureate degree)
AND
. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Minnesota.

 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

1. Provide professional nursing services, including delegated medical services, including medical functions, to clients in the jail/juvenile service center cites.
2. Assess health needs of clients by utilizing independent nursing assessment and professional judgment and recommends modifications to the intervention plan.
3. Communicate pertinent information to the public health nurse, physician and other appropriate members of the health care team.
4. Direct paraprofessional staff in delivery of client services.
5. Complete prescribed forms and documents in accordance with department policies and procedures.
6. Respond to health care requests and implement care plans for clients’ identified health concerns.
7. Institute communicable disease screening measures as directed in standing medical orders for the correctional institution.
8. Maintain all medical records related to health screening and medical treatment administered to clients. Observe data privacy rights of clients.
9. Respond to medical emergencies and arrange urgent care evaluations.
10. Provide health education to inmates. Arrange for follow up care/referral upon discharge or transfer to other facilities
11. Performs public health emergency response functions as trained and assigned within the department’s emergency response plan.
12. Other duties as assigned

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and current methods of care.
· Strong nursing assessment, interviewing, and intervention skills.
· Ability to conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment of adult or juvenile health needs and develop intervention plans based upon identified needs.
· Ability to adapt to nursing principles, practices, and methods to a variety of situations.
· Ability to triage health needs and initiate emergency action.
· Ability to prepare and maintain documentation of health services in a clear, concise manner and in accordance with professional practice standards.
· Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and situations without bias.
· Ability to work independently and prioritize responsibilities.
· Ability to be effective with challenging inmates or residents and environments.
· Ability to competently perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Work Environment

Work is performed in County office buildings, including County correctional facilities. Travel is required. Lifting requirement of up to 34 pounds on an occasional basis. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, printer, telephone, typewriter, calculator, copy and fax machines, nursing supplies and equipment including scales, syringes, hazardous waste, masks, and blood pressure equipment.
