THE POSITION

Under general supervision, this position assists in supervising and conducting swimming, diving, and lifesaving classes; and supervises pool employees. There is currently two ( 2 ) vacancies.

Note: Part-time employees are appointed by and serve at the will of the Department Director.   Employees do not contribute to the Social Security system; however, federal mandate requires new employees to contribute 1.45% of wages to Medicare and requires enrollment in an alternative retirement system.  The mandatory employment retirement contribution ranges from 3.75% to 10.52%.  As a condition of employment, all new employees are required to enroll and participate in the direct deposit program.

 Essential Functions:
Monitors and patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility, including enforcing safety rules and keeping a lookout for accidents in the water and pool area.

Performs rescues in the pool area; and administers CPR and first-aid as needed.

Organizes and conducts in-service training for staff.

Teaches swimming lessons according to Red Cross prescribed and approved methods.

Develops creative programs that incorporate various aquatics experiences and water safety.

Maintains records and statistics for the aquatics programs.

Assists in the maintenance of the pool and monitoring of pool chemicals.

Performs other duties as required.

 Qualification Guidelines:
Two (2) years of paid or volunteer experience as a pool or beach guard.

Graduation from high school or its equivalent.

Possession of current Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, and first aid certificates. Current certificate of Water and Safety Instructor is required at the time of the interview.

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required for certain positions. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment.

Current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance certificate by date of hire.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:
Candidates must be able to lift heavy weights (e.g., a child) and must be able to work for extended periods in the outdoors, exposed to the sun, water and varying temperatures. Exposure to various swimming pool water chemicals, such as chlorine.
