THE POSITION

The Instructor Guard monitors the use of the swimming pool, enforces safety rules, and provides supervision and instructional work in the Aquatics Program.

WORK SCHEDULE:
This part-time position works during the school year (September to June) and during the Summer session (June to September). Work schedules vary as needed.

Note: Part-time employees are appointed by and serve at the will of the Department Director.   Employees do not contribute to the Social Security system; however, federal mandate requires new employees to contribute 1.45% of wages to Medicare and requires enrollment in an alternative retirement system.  The mandatory employment retirement contribution ranges from 3.75% to 10.52%.  As a condition of employment, all new employees are required to enroll and participate in the direct deposit program.

 Essential Functions:
Under supervision, conducts competitive swimming fundamental classes and tests program participants for swimming skills levels.

Performs life guarding duties, including patrolling the swimming pool and aquatics facility, keeping a lookout for accidents in the water and pool area, and enforcing safety rules and regulations.

Performs rescues in the pool area; administers CPR and first aid as needed.

Assists with swim program registration and collection of program fees.

Assists with routine pool cleaning, chemical monitoring and maintenance on or around the pool area.

Performs other related duties as required.

 Qualification Guidelines:
At least 16 years of age or older, with a minimum of one year of experience as a pool or beach lifeguard.

Possession of current Water Safety Instructor, Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, and CPR certificates.

Current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance certificate by date of hire.

Possession of a valid California Driver License may be required for certain positions. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment.

A work permit may be required for current high school students.

 Supplemental Information:
Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions: Candidates must be able to lift heavy weights (e.g., a child) and must be able to work for extended periods in the outdoors, exposed to the sun, water and high temperatures. Exposure to various swimming pool water chemicals, such as chlorine.
