| THE POSITION: Under general supervision, Lifeguards monitor the use of the swimming pool, enforce safety rules, and performs other related work in the Aquatics Program. This is a part-time position, which works during the school year September to June, and summer session June to September. Work schedules vary as needed. Note: Part-time employees are appointed by and serve at the will of the Department Director. Employees do not contribute to the Social Security system; however, federal mandate requires new employees to contribute 1.45% of wages to Medicare and requires enrollment in an alternative retirement system. The mandatory employment retirement contribution ranges from 3.75% to 10.52%. As a condition of employment, all new employees are required to enroll and participate in the direct deposit program. | Essential Functions: | |
| Patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility, including keeping a lookout for accidents in the water and pool areas and enforcing safety rules and regulations. Performs rescues in the pool area, and administers CPR and first-aid as needed. Assists with swim program registration; collects and accounts for money. Assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or around the swimming pool. Assists in monitoring pool chemicals. Performs other duties as required. |

| Qualification Guidelines: | |
| At least 16 years of age or older and have had previous experience in the specific skill or activity required. Possession of current Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, and first aid training certificates. Note: Copies of all certificates must be submitted to the Human Resources Division. This information can either be mailed or submitted in person to the Human Resources Division located at 77 Fair Dr., Post Office Box 1200, Costa Mesa, CA 92628. Note: Information on obtaining the required certificates is available by calling Red Cross at (714) 481-5300. For more information, please call (714) 327-7560, Monday through Friday, 9a.m. to 5p.m. Current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance certificate by date of hire. Possession of a valid California Drivers License may be required for certain positions. A work permit may be required for current high school students. New employees will be fingerprinted by the Costa Mesa Police Department prior to their start date. |

| Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions: Candidates must be able to lift heavy weights (e.g., a child) and must be able to work for extended periods in the outdoors, exposed to the sun, water and varying temperatures. Exposure to various swimming pool water chemicals, such as chlorine. |
