The Contra Costa County Library is recruiting Librarians for a variety of responsible and challenging library service assignments. Contra Costa County encourages interested candidates to consider this exceptional career opportunity with one of the Bay Area’s most progressive and respected libraries. Permanent full-time, permanent part-time, and permanent intermittent (on-call substitute) vacancies may be filled from the results of this continuous examination. Initial assignments may be as a Youth Services Librarian, Adult or Teen Services Librarian, Collection Development Librarian, or Juvenile Hall Librarian.

New Librarians receive training in all aspects of the County Library’s operation, services and programs, as well as in-depth training in their specific assignment. Promotional opportunities are available to Library Specialist, Community Library Manager, and Senior Community Library Manager.

The County Library operates twenty-five (25) community libraries, and serves over 925,000 urban, suburban and rural patrons within a 750 square mile area. Department staffing is 325 and annual circulation exceeds six (6) million.

 Typical Tasks:
  • Searches for subject information requested from branch libraries
  • Compiles book lists on various subjects
  • Assigns subject headings to pamphlets
  • Decides subject and Dewey classification of books
  • Prepares catalog cards
  • Checks bibliographic resources to locate publishing information and/or reviews
  • Searches bibliographic sources to including Plin for locations of materials to be borrowed on inter-library loan
  • Checks published materials to ascertain facts required to order new books
  • Assists patrons in using library facilities
  • Conducts story hours and other programs
  • Plans exhibits
  • Confers with supervisor on library policies and procedures

 Minimum Qualifications:
License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

Education: Possession of a graduate degree from a school of librarianship accredited by the American Library Association.

Applicants in the last semester or quarter of obtaining the required educational degree may complete the application for Librarian, and if hired, may start as Librarian Trainee ($3,817/month) prior to completion of the degree. Librarian Trainee is the trainee level in the professional librarian series and is flexibly staffed to the classification of Librarian.

2. Application Evaluation: The examination will consist of an evaluation of each candidate’s relevant education, training, and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire. Candidates will receive a rating of 70% for meeting the minimum qualifications. Additional points will be awarded to those candidates who possess related education, training, and/or experience beyond the minimum qualifications. The names of successful candidates will be placed on an employment list in rank order for a period of 6 months. (Weighted 100%)
