| The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is accepting applications from Licensed Vocational Nurses who are interested in performing technical nursing duties.
Under the supervision of registered professional nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses perform a wide range of patient care activities including general bedside nursing and patient hygiene, safety, and comfort. They perform catheterization, enemas, and vaginal irrigation; take and record vital signs and chart observations; care for tracheotomy, jejustomy, colostomy, and chest tubes; and performs nasogastric tube insertions and irrigations. Licensed Vocational Nurses sign out and are responsible for controlled drugs, including narcotics, and under direction, prepare and administer medication subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or orally. Following training, they participate on Code Blue and Code Grey teams as required. Other duties include: applying dressings, compresses and soaks; obtaining specimens; routine cleaning of hospital equipment; making beds; lifting, moving, bathing, and feeding patients; orienting and training assigned personnel; and occasionally performing clerical duties. In some cases, incumbents may assist with occupational, physical, and respiratory therapy programs. |

| Minimum Qualifications: | |
| License Required: Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse issued by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners, State of California.
Experience: No experience required except for mental health assignments which require either (a) six (6) months of full-time experience or its equivalent performing the duties of a Licensed Vocational Nurse in a mental health setting or (b) successful completion of a three week precepted orientation to mental health practical nursing administered by Contra Costa County Health Services. Special Requirements: (a) As a condition of hiring, all positions must successfully pass a pharmacology test administered by the County. Prior to completing probation, all positions must pass a Basic Life Support (CPR) test; (b) for psychiatric service positions must be certified in the management of assaultive behavior and be available for assignment to stat team by completion of probation; (c) depending on assignment, must successfully complete the I.V. therapy certification program administered by Contra Costa County Health Services. Note: Within three (3) months of assignment to the Intensive Care Unit must: 1) successfully complete the basic EKG course administered by Contra Costa County Health Services or; 2) successfully complete a similar course approved by the State of California Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners and pass the Contra Costa County Health Services EKG proficiency exam. Background Requirements: A background investigation will be conducted on all candidates prior to appointment. For some classifications, fingerprints will be taken. |

2. Examination: The examination will consist of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and the supplemental questionnaire. Candidates will receive a rating of 70 for meeting the minimum qualifications. Additional points will be awarded to those candidates who possess related education, training, and/or experience beyond the minimum qualifications.
