| Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in providing nursing services to County Jail inmates; performs related work as assigned. | |
| Typical Duties: | |
| Assesses inmates health needs; plans and implements care, and provides ongoing evaluation; performs clinical nursing functions including suture removal, wound treatment and EKGs; collects inmate history, medical records and prescription data; monitors daily medical needs and coordinates with multi disciplinary team; participates in prevention and control of communicable diseases; collects forensic specimens; provides education and counseling as needed by the individual; prepares and maintains individual case records and program reports. Essential functions of this position include: standing, walking and sitting while providing treatment to inmates; vision acuity (near & far); working with and around other staff members, detention officers and inmates; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation with peers and inmates; finger dexterity and touch to distribute medication. Environmental factors this position is indoors. | |
| Minimum Qualifications: | |
| Must possess a current Arizona RN license, and current CPR certification; OR, any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Must successfully pass a background investigation and polygraph.
This position is non-exempt from overtime. |

| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | |
| Shift work, some weekends and evenings required.
Considerable knowledge of : • principles and practices of clinical nursing; • principles and practices of corrections operations; • communicable disease and chronic disease prevention. Working knowledge of: • symptoms and treatment protocols for a wide range of chronic conditions, including HIV, Hypertension, Diabetes, Drug/alcohol abuse, etc. • correctional security procedures and systems. Skill in: • health assessment, planning and implementation of appropriate treatment; • use of medical instruments and laboratory equipment; • clinical service practices; • providing health education and counseling; • conducting needs assessment. Ability to: • work in a correctional setting; • exercise initiative and judgment in selecting appropriate nursing interventions; • respond appropriately to emergency situations; • work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays; • identify clients in need of services without referrals; • prepare complete and accurate records and reports; • establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; • follow written and verbal instructions; • communicate effectively verbally and in writing. |
