Hiring salary $10.52 hourly. This is a substitute position and hours will vary. Position reopened 10/29/09. Performs responsible semi-skilled and routine protective service work in supervising the safe use of public swimming facilities by pool visitors and aids troubled bathers in emergencies; does related work as required.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintains discipline at a swimming pool; observes actions of swimmers and enforces water safety rules and pool rules; provides emergency life saving services to swimmers in need; cleans the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule; adjusts and maintains the filter and heating systems for the pool; may give swimming instructions to individuals or groups; takes part in training programs to improve lifesaving skills; performs related tasks as required.
Education, Experience and Skills:
Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school. Experience:  Previous lifeguard experience preferred; Thorough knowledge of water safety rules and of life saving and first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies; Skills: Considerable skill in and strength in swimming; ability to enforce rules, to remain calm under stress, and to clean and maintain a swimming pool, and related facilities. Special requirements: Possession of a Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard.Lifeguards who teach swimming must also possess a Water Safety Instructor Certificate.
