Job Title: Inclusion Companion-Various Activities

This position is responsible for supporting individuals with disabilities to participate in ‘typical’ Parks and Recreation programs.

Inclusion companions may be needed for weekend outings, for organized sports, for community center activities or for after school

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the participant in engaging in P&R activities using a variety of modalities, such as teaching, modeling, coaching and directing.
 
  • Assesses participants’ skill levels and adapts activities to fit individual needs on a case-by-case basis.
 
 
  • Communicate with ‘typical’ participants, staff and instructor in order to adapt the individual’s participation in the program.
 
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and caretakers in order to fully assess the individual’s day-to-day needs.
 
  • May record behavior patterns of individual during each class or session.
 
  • Interacts with other class participants to inform and support the inclusion of individuals with disabilities.
 
  • Facilitates tactful communication between parents/guardians/caretakers and P&R staff as needed; maintains enthusiasm in all contact with the public, program participants, parents and other employees.
 
·         Ensures a safe environment for self and the individual with disabilities; carries out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with all Town, department and regulatory policies; follows safety procedures. Identifies unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible, and reports them to their supervisor or appropriate staff.

Knowledge of:
 
  • Principles, techniques, and materials associated with inclusion support in recreation programs
 
·       Principles and techniques of motivating and adapting activities for people with disabilities.
 
Ability to:
 
  • Communicate effectively with co workers, customers and outside agencies
 
  • Read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

 Minimum Qualifications:
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job.
 
Experience
Six months experience working with individuals with disabilities.
