This position is responsible for inspecting commercial and residential buildings in the town to ensure compliance with applicable codes.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs on-site building inspections of mechanical work to ensure compliance with codes.

Notifies contractors, engineers, architects, subcontractors, and property owners of code violations, issues correction orders, and discusses remedies for deficiencies.

Checks to ensure that contractors are state-licensed and that proper permits have been issued; issues citations for non-permitted work.

Reviews plans for construction, modification, and renovation of buildings; advises contractors/owners of changes required for code compliance, proper work technique, and safety.

Meets with and answers telephone inquires from builders, contractors, architects, engineers, electricians, and homeowners; responds to request for inspections.

Completes all paper work associated with the inspection process, including a daily report of status of inspections.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • National Building and/or Electrical and/or Mechanical and/or Plumbing Codes
  • Revelant state codes and local zoning and applicable ordinances and town ordinances.
  • Methods and practices utilized in the building trade relative to but not limited to residential, commercial, educational, swimming pool and medical construction


Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
  • Review plans and technical specifications.
  • Comunicate clearly verbally and in writing
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Operate gauge reading equipment and other testing and measurement instruments.
  • Operate a computer, calculator and other common office equipment
  • Drive an automobile.

 Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent

Possession of  valid North Carolina Driver's License

Possession of or ability to readily obtain  at least one Standard Certificate from the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board (electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing).

Two  years of responsible related experience in performing code field inspectios
