This employee performs preventive maintenance and repair work on facilities, systems, fixtures, and equipment located in County buildings, including the Arlington County Detention Facility. Work involves a variety of building trades functions. Specific duties include: performing rough carpentry maintenance and repairs; making small repairs to drywall; patching plaster on walls and ceilings; building, repairing, assembling, and mounting office furniture and fixtures; mixing paints and repairing a variety of surfaces for painting both inside and outside of buildings; making small repairs to concrete walkways, stairs, walls, and floors; servicing and making adjustments to motors, pumps, bearings, pulleys, and other power driven components; investigating minor plumbing and structural leakage problems to determine cause and scope of problem and type of repair needed; performing minor electrical repairs such as fixing frayed wires, replacing circuit breakers, and replacing ballasts in fluorescent fixtures; cleaning, adjusting and repairing burners on gas furnaces, water heaters and small boilers; repairing or replacing flush tanks, plumbing fixtures and utility traps; cleaning and snaking sanitary disposal lines and drain pipes; assisting in cutting, threading and installing pipes and fittings; making soldering repairs and installations; and assisting in the installation and removal of air conditioners and fans. The employee will operate a County vehicle to perform assigned duties away from the primary worksite.

 Qualification Requirements:

Minimum: One year of general maintenance mechanic experience, which includes a variety of specific trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, masonry, or HVAC.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
a) experience working in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades;
b) experience working independently at multiple sites; and/or
c) experience in the maintenance and repair of HVAC systems.

 Special Requirements:
The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
