This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies.
An Emergency Communications Technician (ECT), under general supervision, performs technical emergency communications work in the Police Department dispatching police vehicles; answers emergency calls on the telephone and enters data into a computer system while questioning callers for information; determines the nature, validity and disposition of calls; operates a wide variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles and telephones; performs call reception and dispatch activities utilizing computer-assisted dispatch system; answers or refers inquiries and complaints regarding a wide variety of public safety and related matters; accesses, retrieves, and transmits vehicular or personal information to field units; relays relevant situational information to other City departments and/or outside public safety agencies; performs other duties as required. ECT’s are required to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
This fast-paced environment demands excellent listening skills and good judgment, analytical skills, the ability to multi-task and remain courteous, calm and tactful with others in stressful situations. It is critical for the incumbent to have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to work harmoniously in a close team environment. Shift work of either 6:30 am to 6:30 pm or 6:30 pm to 6:30 am is required; work days will include weekends and holidays.
ECT’s are considered essential employees and are required to be at work on time for each shift, including snow days and other hazardous weather conditions. The successful candidate will have never committed, been involved in or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
• Receives and processes emergency and non-emergency Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, and Code Enforcement requests for assistance;
• Answers calls pertaining to robberies, shootings, fires, ambulance requests, or other emergencies;
• Determines the exact location of the place or point of emergency;
• Under supervision or in tandem with more senior staff, assist in dispatches of the proper equipment to handle Police emergencies; relays information and executes tasks/requests related to these emergencies;
• Dispatches additional equipment when necessary;
• Maintains radio contact from communications center with unit(s) on call;
• Records emergency information concerning calls and complaints on complaint cards.
• Conducts routine equipment checks;
• Operates a teletype in making record checks to determine arrest histories;
• Notifies businesses of alarm and status of the emergency;
• Assists Police Officers by notifying wreckers for towing service;
• Operates teletype and computer terminals;
• Participates in the training necessary to successfully perform ECT work;
• Responds to complaints by completing reports and appropriate forms;
• Screens calls and determines the appropriate actions; initiates action as required by standard operating procedures;
• Disseminates information, directions, and forms to the public;
• Maintains computer-aided dispatch and administrative files and records;
• Performs related work as required. |

Minimum & Additional Requirements:
|
Three years public contact experience, including some experience in the operation of a radio and related communications equipment; and completion of high school-level courses in English; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
MUST successfully complete all provisions of the departmental training program for the Emergency Communication Technician prior to completion of a one-year probationary period. |

Preferred Qualifications:
|
Computer literacy and typing experience; knowledge of City geography; valid driver’s license in the state in which you reside.
