This class is a fully certified Peace Officer responsible for performing duties in assigned division of the department (court services, civil process, administration, support services, field detention). This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. We provide a 3% pay incentive for officers with an Associate’s degree, and a 6% pay incentive for officers with a Bachelor’s degree, and up to 3 nights lodging/meals allowance is provided for out of area applicants in our 2nd phase of the background process, and a $1,500 relocation allowance is available for out of area new hires for Deputy Sheriff positions.

MUST SUBMIT COMPLETED BACKGROUND FORM AT TIME OF APPLICATION, and pass a comprehensive background process including: employment, criminal, driving, credit and controlled substance history check. After receiving a conditional job offer, applicants will be required to pass a polygraph, psychological evaluation, and physical/drug test.

 Essential Duties:
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Performs general law enforcement duties to include: responding to calls, assisting with the apprehension of suspects or inmates, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, and serving civil processes and court orders
  • Prepares proper paperwork for affidavits, reports, warrants, confirms validity, and serves documents as required.
  • Maintains daily logs of shift activity and prepares various reports.
  • Escorts and transports inmates to and from various departments, courts, and appointments.
  • Resolves disputes between inmates and the general public, and maintains security and safety in the detention center, jail, Justice Center, and other County locations.
  • Processes paperwork for the admittance or release of inmates or detainees, searches individuals and inventories, confiscates, or distributes property.
  • Analyzes evidence, reports, and intelligence in the investigation of incidents and crimes.
  • Attends daily roll call to receive briefing information and instruction concerning duties and criminal activities.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:

Positions assigned to Civil Division may be responsible for:
  • Assisting citizens with the Civil process;
  • Serving documents such as protective orders, eviction notices, warrants and other civil Documents.

Positions assigned to Investigations may be responsible for:
  • Performing in-depth investigations of drug trafficking, child exploitation, and other specific criminal activity.

Positions assigned to Support Services may be responsible for:
  • Developing department policy & procedures;
  • Speaking to classrooms regarding drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other choices that impair well-being;
  • Providing training.

Positions assigned to Training may be responsible for:
  • Assisting in developing training programs and events;
  • Conducting training programs and events.

Positions assigned to Maintenance may be responsible for:
  • Overseeing a crew of inmate workers;
  • Maintaining an inventory of supplies, ensuring items are accounted for.

Positions assigned to Court Security may be responsible for:
  • Maintaining security in the Justice Center.

Positions assigned to the Detention Center may be responsible for:
  • Leading the security in the Detention Center;
  • Maintaining and delivering supplies to Sheriff offices and buildings;
  • Issuing uniforms and supplies to Deputies;
  • Delivering items to inmates and detainees while ensuring items are safe and permitted.

 Education/Experience, Licenses, Knowledge and Skills, Physical Requirements:
Training and Experience:
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;
  • One (1) year of prior law enforcement experience;
  • Must be Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified Peace Officer;
  • Must be 20 years of age;
  • Must be a US citizenship; and
  • or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

Licensing Requirements:
  • Must be P.O.S.T. Certified Peace Officer;
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License;
  • Must be 20 years of age.


Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
  • Report preparation procedures;
  • Customer service principles;
  • Department policies and procedures;
  • Use of force principles;
  • Weapon procedures;
  • County geography;
  • Self defense techniques.


Skill in:
  • Applying and enforcing applicable laws, rules and regulations;
  • Performing investigations;
  • Qualifying with a weapon;
  • Securing and analyzing crime scenes;
  • Operating a vehicle;
  • Preparing reports;
  • Operating a computer and applicable software;
  • Analyzing situations;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.


Physical Requirements:
  • Positions in this class require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.
